Bathroom advertising

view profile

kjgriffith99 says:

We have the "old" building and the new addition. As the communications director, I don't allow ANY advertising in the nice new bathrooms. My reasoning: it just looks so trashy and cluttered, and there are other means of communication (e-news, bulletin) that can be used.

However, I have let people continue using existing bulletin boards in the old, 80's-style bathrooms. I don't allow advertising in the stalls.

I keep getting cornered by individuals who want something new to put up in the old (or new bathrooms). Am I being unreasonable for limiting the bathroom advertising? I mean, it's a BATHROOM!

Thoughts? How do you handle this in your church?

we do bathroom advertising is all of our bathrooms. it's a...captive...audience. only stuff designed by the creative dept can be displayed. tasteful frames and professional design can make things look a lot better.

As a bathroom user I like something to look at other than the bathroom door. As long as it's well done and in a nice frame or holder or something that makes it look like it was put there by an adult and not highschool girl.

we write the word "satan" on all the plastic things in the men's urinals. that's all we do for advertising in the bathrooms. :)

we do bulletin boards but no stalls and it must come through the dept. to be laminated before posting. if something is on there unlaminated, it's tossed.

We do like @muntz and have a single advertisement on the back of the stalls. So far its just been for campus-wide, really big stuff. I design it and put them in plastic wall sign holders from Office Depot.

I got the idea from the Baptist Church that hosted MinistryCOM last year. I hadn't seen it before and it blew me away. I mean, I actually left the bathroom and went in search of flyers to take home! (They also had a seating area outside the bathroom proper with table and chairs. Pretty sure I found them near that.) I haven't actually implemented the extra flyers part though. I wanted to be sure folks weren't going to complain and there isn't a place to put them that is near the bathrooms. I've been doing it since May and so far so good!

We once had a Men's Sporting Clayshoot event coming up and
( I swear I am NOT making this up) we took the little clay targets
(they look like little frisbees) and wrote "How's your Aim?"
with event info and put them in the urinals.

We got away with it because it was ONLY in the men's bathroom.

I'm AMAZED I was not called to the pastors office on that one.

I agree with you if you're letting people just tape sheets of paper to the door that does look trashy. You can have bathroom advertising done in a more professional way. You can have it in a nice frame with plexi glass so it looks good. Most people actually enjoy it and it's a great way to keep your parishioners informed of what's going on. There are even digital screens that you can use now that really look nice.

Timely. This is a project I'm supposed to be researching right now. In every stall ... ta-da!... a plexiglass poster holder!
(All the semi-classy restaurants do it.)
I'm trying to find the kind that doesn't required unscrewing every time we change the poster - just slide it in. Any suggestions for a retail supplier?

We had ladies hanging their flyers in the stalls for various church events - but they were not hung neatly - they were not uniform and often they were not approved by the communications team soooo... we hung frames on the back of every stall - all level and at the same height. We also hung them in front of the urinals. Our comm team develops and fills those frames. We use them to advertise only church-wide events or events that a visitor who is not a believer would connect with (ie: Our family camp has been up for the past 3 weeks). These get swapped out every 3-4 weeks. We are still refining the process and may use the "Pot Spot" (as we affectionately call it) as space to advertise to a particular audience.

I agree with @muntz - why not take advantage of a captive audience.

Art Aspirations, I went to Office Depot:

"Wall Sign Holder Vertical" was what they called it and they were about $6 a piece.

You just use tape to hold in onto the back of the door, and it has a decent sized opening to slide things in and out of.

Cheap!

@ Leanne. Thanks for the details. We don't want to destroy the metal doors with screws.

reading in the bathroom is a necessity. i always enjoy looking at stuff even if it is advertising. why not try graffiti on the doors to make it more nostalgic? blend it in with the newspaper (sports page) so people have options.

we buy most of our new frames at Displays2Go. ugly site, but good prices on the products.

if you're looking for something classier and easy to load, try these: 8.5x11 frames

wish we would have used those. we have the clear acrylic frames, hung by someone who didn't care. sloppy liquid nail mess.
