Getting back into creative work

view profile

GreenEyed_Monster says:

So about the first week of may I helped create the most beautiful piece I have in my life. It took a LOT out of me, so much that I really needed a bunch of time off.

This is what God and I created (ok with a little help from my husband).
pretty zoe

Anyways, I haven't done any design or creative work in 12 weeks (not much creative ways to change a diaper)...how would you get back into the swing of things?

How beautiful and perfect she is! Congratulations! A masterpiece!

I have no answer for you on the creativity! I lost mine for a while after each kid, it just finds its way back eventually when more of your brain returns.

Grats :p

No critiques here :)

edit: I disagree on creative ways to change a diaper, I was changing my daughters on the recliner and she did a back flip off it... granted shes two and didn't find it as funny as I did (she didn't get hurt) but you get the point. Play with her... there is creative juices at work.

She looks sweet as sweet gets. Makes me miss when mine were this little and the youngest just turned a year.

My wife says her brain goes to visit the baby while she is pregnant.

I would say the best way to jump start your creativity is to start with the focus of your life. I know when something consumes me I can't think about anything else. If I try reading a book or watching TV or planning a sermon or anything, the thing that is consuming me is there with me the whole time.

I imagine that is what it is like with the new baby and so turn your creativity towards her. Creative photos and edit them into amazing comps. Play with scrapbooks and stuff till you can begin focusing on other small projects.

Seems logical to me but who knows ...

PuriChristos, that is logical! I actually was going to say that at the time all I could do were really good birth announcements and scrapbook pages (made w/photoshop) of my kids. Your advice was dead on.

hovermom, shhh, I like to let people think the brain returns.

Beautiful baby girl.

I'm currently pregnant and have experienced some decline in my creative capabilities, particularly during my first trimester when all I wanted to do was sleep. With my energy back now, I've gotten excited about being creative with the babies room: paint colors, refinishing furniture, toys, books, art for the room etc. I also never realized how many creative websites and blogs there are for arty parents!!!

I have to say I am a bit nervous about returning to work after my girl is born. I'm sure it will be hard to get back in to work in general. My guess is continuing to find inspiration on the web, in print, and all around will help get back in the groove. Best of luck to you in your creative and motherhood endeavors.
