Really? I use it all the time. Are you not even seeing the site? Are you PC or Mac?

Nix that previous link, I sent you the wrong one. This is the one you want:
homepage.mac.com/rcrews/software/validator/
This second link is far easier to install, the first one is for tried-and-true geeks.

(This is soooo embarrassing.) Ok... I downloaded the validator, dropped into applications folder. Took my SVG file and dropped it into the validator icon. Some text came up in the validators window... but I still can't open the SVG file. Am I missing something stupid here? How do i not know this? So sorry everyone.

Oh, wait, you're trying just to OPEN the SVG? Validating an SVG just means that you're comparing it to W3 standards that the language is "valid" per their requirements.
SVG, which stands for Scalable Vector Graphics, is actually a programming language like PHP or HTML, but it is actually a programming language to creates vector images, usually maps. SVG is very popular with Wiki for country and district mapping.
What is this an SVG of? Do you just need to open it to use it in creating some other content? If so, Adobe Illustrator will open the SVG, and you can then save it as an AI or EPS or JPG or whatever.

Ok, here's what I am trying to do.
I created a file in photoshop, then vectorized it with vector magic.
It created a SVG file and I opened it in Illustrator and added text.
I saved it and closed the application.
Now when I try to open it Illustrator gives an error message that it needs to be validated. I can't place the file in Illustrator either.
Any more thoughts?

Wow, that bites. Email me the file to proofs@vipministry.com and I'll run it through a parser and see where the error is. In all likelihood something you did before exporting it made a few lines vomit, so the code isn't recognized by the software now.
If you import an SVG into Illustrator, save it as an AI. that makes it much easier to work with in the future.

Or a cricket game, SeanP.
Basically, she's working with SVG, which is a graphics format and a programming language in one. Illustrator supposedly works with SVG just fine, but I've seen complex vectors that get scrambled by Illustrator on exporting, so I rarely export in SVG. AI is much more error tolerant, especially if you have vector objects that are open or screwy.

Since I edited the SVG in Illustrator... then saved it as such... I may have scrambled and ruined my file?

cami: Doubtful! Because SVG is actually human-readable (well, most humans probably can't, but some), they tend to be "easy" to fix. If you send me the file, I can validate and browse the error and maybe fix it in a heartbeat and send it back.
SeanP: Watch a few episodes of Gilmore Girls if you really want to be lost, hah.

I hate TV.
except for the Office, BBC and NBC versions. Black Addder, Keeping Up With Appearances, Arrested Development, Extras, Law and Order, Law and Order CI and the BBC tv show Sherlock Holmes starring Jeremy Brett as the Slueth (quite possibly the best show ever)

VIP... I'll send you the file... just don't make fun of me for poor design. (You guys scare me.)

Just got your file in email.
First error found is:
Line Number 7549, Column 84. Opened the SVG and looked, and it has to do with a font titled "'theKing&Queenfont'"
The problem is the use of the ' letter in the font name. SVG doesn't allow for it. Going to dig deeper.

Ok, I fixed your file. Found 3 errors, all pertaining to theKing&Queenfont.
It wasn't the ' symbol, but the & symbol. That means that font is now broken. I am emailing it back to you. I might be able to fix it and keep the font, but it would be pretty laborious. let me know if you need my help further, I'll be happy to pitch in. At least it opens now!

Yeah! How fantastic!
I was not looking forward to recreating that file. Now i don't have to. (I am goin to keep your mail tho... so I can abuse your kindness again.)
Do you think I could turn the font into an outline and that would solve the problem?

Well, what I would do if I was you is put back in theKing&Queen font, but don't save it as an SVG, save it as an AI. that'll keep the font just fine. SVG is fine for exporting out of vector magic, but after you start working on it in Illustrator, just save it as an AI. Much simpler, and you won't have this problem in the future :)

So like SeanP I have no idea what SVG is. Why would one want to save in SVG format? Just Curious, it has to have some sort of function.

I just wrote this about SVG. It's actually a design LANGUAGE like postscript, and used primarily for web vector graphics and animations. Think of it like an animated PDF format that is also open source.
Why use it? Because it is open source, I guess. Wikipedia has SVGs all over the place whenever you see a map.
