"Great Expectations" Message Series Help

view profile

directcutter says:

Our church attended a conference on "Experiential Worship" and have since started creating approximately 6 week long message series. Many churches here at the lab do message series. The thing that makes it difficult for us is that we aren't picking a theme and crafting the messages and bible verses around that theme. Before we started doing this, we decided to go verse by verse through the Book of Luke, having done this previously with the Book of Galations to the enjoyment of all our members. For the last six months we have basically gotten up to Luke Chapter 6. We will likely be in Luke for at least another year or two.

So now we are trying to craft message themes that last for a few weeks, while continuing in a linear way through Luke with all his various themes.

Our first attempt at a message series was called "The Extreme Journey" and we had road signs on our bulletin that represented each week's message.

Our second and more recent series was called "Radical Remedies" that had a doctor theme since Luke was a physican by trade and Jesus offered some radical suggestions for living and also wanting to do heart surgery on us.

Our next message series has been labeled "Great Expectations."

Every message has a unique title that connects with the overall theme.

June 23/24 is Luke 7:1-10 and called "Building Expectations."

June 30/July 1 is Luke 7:11-17 and called "Raising Expectations."

July 7/8 is Luke 7:18-35 and called "Grounding Expectations."

July 14/15 is Luke 7:36-50 and called "Exceeding Expectations."

July 21/22 is Luke 8:1-3 and called "Expectations Restored."

It is wrapped up on July 29th which is VBS Sunday.

So in the past we've done road sign and doctor related imagery.

What images come to mind with this "Great Expectations" series? Images could be for our bulletin cover, our main powerpoint, or images to put around our church building.

Sorry for the last minute request. We will be starting this coming weekend. Thanks!

To me, "Great Expectations" brings to mind pregnancy. Weird, and probably won't work with your theme.

I think of someone sitting in a movie theater, popcorn in hand, eyes wide open waiting for the latest blockbuster to start.

How about a theme focused around getting gifts like at Christmas or birthday, which would tie in to your VBS since kids love gifts.

Another one is the expecations associated with getting married. Engagement, prep for wedding, etc.

How about a "a boy or a girl standing at a street corner waiting as if there is something big around the corner"? There can also be a couple of adults (lost in the depth of focus) on the street who don't seem to have any idea or "great expectation" that the child has.
