About Cerrillos, New MexicoThe sleepy little village of Cerrillos on Galisteo Creek, south of Santa Fe, was once such a booming place that it was considered for the State's Capitol. Mining in the adjacent Cerrillos Hills was so active in the late 1800s, that the population of Cerrillos grew into the thousands. Hotels and bars and businesses thrived. Tiffany had a commercial turquoise mine here, gold and silver were occasionally being dug up from the ground, lead was fairly common, and a zinc mill dominated the north edge of town. Now only a handful of people live in the village. There's a bar, a church, a petting zoo, riding stables, a turquoise mining museum and a few other businesses catering to tourism. The movie Young Guns was filmed in Cerrillos, as was Vampires, scenes from Beer for My Horses, and a few others over the years. There are more adobe houses here than any other type of stucture. Cerrillos is the gateway to the wonderful Cerrillos Hills Historic Park, a wide open place for exploration and a close-up look at the mining history of the area. |
