[Closed] Explore Top 40

view profile

Mukumbura  Pro User  says:

This was originally about Exca a.k.a. Explore Catchers, but now refers to its successor group L'amicizia fa la Differenza.

Today, 24 May, 62 of the 500 photos in Explore are from this group and 17 of the Top 20 photos in Explore are from the same group.

This has reached ludicrous proportions

How is it that we now see the same small group of people in Explore / Interestingness Top 40 every single day in recent weeks?

It has become so predictable that last night I wrote down 20 names of people I thought would be in the Top 40 again today - and at this moment 17 of those 20 are occupying Top 40 places.

The same people will probably be there tomorrow and the next day and the next.

Anyone else noticing a pattern?

: I got one in 2006. I took a screen dump of it I think, but I've lost it. I wasn't aware, at teh time, that I was supposed to post it to my stream as an indication to lesser Flickr user that I was a Most Elite Member of Flickr. I won't forget the next time the Donkey looks on me with favour.

: Hi Don,

Since I've apparently made it to your list of people that have made your pet Donkey cry, I'll have to vote here.

I'd go for Option 6: Fix explore so that it doesn't favour people who hide in secret groups or behind the memberships of mutual fave/comment groups, and does favour pictures which have actually been looked at by the people adding favourites and comments.

Thank you for your time.

Me too, since you blocked most people of our group, we cannot participate in your little voting.

I guess that's called a fair and honest poll: Muzzle your opponents and you get the result, that you want.

I go with Option 7:

Fix Explore so that is doesn't favour people, who hide in secret groups or behind memberships of fave/comment groups based on mutual agreement. And instead let a jury of Flickr members, who was randomly chosen and who changes everyday, make a selection based on an also randomly chosen limited amount of photos.

Since you've revealed that you are the blocker, Don, I feel we can talk openly. Like everyone with a photostream, some/many of your pics are very good, and I mean that sincerely. I can also understand one of the reasons for the blocking — it makes the link(s) to your pictures throw up the 'Oops, you cannot view this picture' message, and prevents us discussing future pictures of yours.

The ONLY reason we selected some of your pics is that a) they were clearly gamed *regardless of quality*, and b) the selected pics, to some of us, were not of the quality that their positions in Explore merited. We are not 'picking' on you in particular. There are worse examples of gamed pictures in your groups, and, shall we say, several/many people in the gaming groups who have pulled strokes of the very worst kind — and we, and plenty of very experienced outsiders who know these things, have recorded evidence to prove it.

Enough said. Act as you will, but you're an intelligent man and we hope you relent. And we'll give you personal *public* credit for removing the blocks. We can't promise we'll never discuss your pics in the future, but our little forum is public and I'm sure our admins will listen sympathetically to any requests made to them by you, or indeed anyone else who feels slighted or picked upon in some way.

And stop removing critical or sarcastic comments from your pics, please. You (or your associates) are welcome to be sarcastic on any of the group members pictures. We won't delete your comment(s) or slag you in forums (except perhaps as a good-natured joke, hope you understand!) or block you/others.

Even if their photos are on Front Page Explore, everyone in Flickr knows they are cheaters and corrupt, so they have no credibility at all!! Since they don't want to play fair, this is what they deserve!!

I couldn't care less if my account will be deleted as I know there would be complaints to Flickr from these exposed people, at least the project was a success!! I strongly suggest that you check out their streams and you would know what I'm talking about!

Some of those people listed above sent me nasty emails. Obviously, they are guilty. My reply to their emails:

Then why don't you make your FME group
public?? You guys very well know that you created this group to make everyone's photo go to Front Page!! You act like you don't know how Explore works. Not only you guys are a bunch of cheaters but liars too!!

How can you explain those members of your group who had their first ever FP when they joined the group?? Their photos hardly make Explore then suddenly on FP??! Shame on you people!

I don't care if my comments above would be deleted from this thread or even my account. I have presented facts here. If I would be accused of abuse of power these people obviously ABUSE EXPLORE!!!

I agree, Mukumbura!

Try to keep your anger in check, Againstcorruptpeople!

Fingerpointing and personally insulting others is both contraproductive and an offense against the Flickr community guidelines! Besides it does neither help the case nor you and you make a lot of people very, very angry!

I'll second that.
We're all aware of the explore gaming, and most of us can find out for themselves who's involved in the gaming. No need to name names.
Let our protest be heard without fingerpointing.
Patience is the key word here.
These things need time, but a change is coming as promised by Flickr staff.

It's the wrong thing for a Flickr member to do, but the group does need exposing.

In the fleeting half-hour or so that I was in FME before being booted out, I can confirm that the members' list was more or less as quoted (I think there's appreciably more members, but not shown) and that the extracts from the thread are correct.

And I, and almost for certain none of my EO colleagues, am/are NOT the poster. It goes without saying most of the onlookers here will have saved this page to their hard disks :)))))))))))))))

I think we're done. I've edited out the finger-pointy stuff and I'm not convinced that it's not going to happen again. This topic is on the express freeway to "all kinds of wrong."

I would remind people that Top 500 is an algorithm based on certain kinds of activity to bubble up content for people (most likely not members) to have some springboard into Flickr.

It really disheartens me to see, four years later what it has become and how it's tearing a small part of our community apart and turning reasonable people into haters. The algorithm is old and tire and the Magic Donkey is going to be put out to pasture sometime "soon". In the meantime, if everyone could take a deep breath and step back from the abyss.

There is so much more to Flickr than this. Take that passion, the anger and frustration and doing something positive with it. Don't let it turn you into something you're not.
