Did you know..

1. You can access your photostream by merely typing: flickr.com/USERNAME instead of flickr.com/photos/USERNAME?

2. You can change the order of photos in your stream by changing the upload time and date?

3. That before Flickr, there was Game Never Ending, which was resurrected April 1, 2008 for a few hours?

4. You can embed a video or photo in comments or discussions by putting square brackets [] around a Flickr URL? (Thanks, Jakerome!) It also works for photoset URLs! (Thanks, Leo Reynolds!)

5. You can still use the old-school Organizr? (From the Flickr Hacks thread via GustavoG.)

6. You can surf anyone's photostream by adding the /surf at the end of their URL? (Thanks, Tabhastal!)

7. Flickr automatically changes thread postings with all uppercase (ALL-CAPS) into lowercase?

8. You cannot post TinyURL links in thread postings?

9. Dos Pesos is still is Flickr's official mascot and the image of him is the first photo in Flickr uploaded that is not a test image?

10. That the Magic Donkey meme may have started with this posting by Heather in the Help Forum dated August 15, 2005? (Can someone find me the first instance the Magic Donkey was mentioned?)

Do you know any Flickr tips, tricks, hacks, and general stuff that people do not know about, but should?

Post it here!

(EDIT: Added people's tidbits.)

The URL is the bit you see up in your browser address bar (or you can get it by clicking the "share this" button on the photo page and copying the "grab the link" bit.

Example, to post your latest photo:

Lomokev: Well, Flickr trivia is welcome, too. :)

Also, you do not need to type in &#91; to get the brackets, though it is more proper. Just throw in a styling tag somewhere in the middle to "break" it. For example [<i></i>]

You can also do the same with HTML if you want to display HTML tags in threads, but it is better if you use actual HTML codes like &gt; for > and &lt; for <.

You can also do the same with all-caps.

Copy this into your address bar and hit enter:

javascript:void(document.getElementsByTagName('BODY')[0].style.backgroundColor='#000000')

Instantly, a new, hideous black background.

EDIT: Yes, I know it should change the text to white, but as I hate the idea of a black background, I can't be bothered.

Now, if people start asking for a black matte, I might be more sympathetic, but reading white text on a black background gives me a migraine, flashbacks to the VT220 terminals I used for my degree, and a strong urge to scream "NO!!! As soon as the Mac came out, the black background was DEAD! DEAD! DEAD!"

Oh, go on then. Because I'm nice.

javascript:document.getElementsByTagName('BODY')[0].style.backgroundColor='#000000';var a = document.getElementsByTagName('P');for(var i = 0; i < a.length; i++) a[i].style.color='#ffffff';void(null);

that &q=+ hack is actually a lot more useful than you think! Great way to add some advanced searching with a * wildcard to your photostream.

Example that fills one feature request, All your favorites in "detailed view":

and ALL group discussions by # of replies:
flickr.com/search/groups/?q=+&w=34427469792%40N01&amp...

Browse an entire pool in "detailed view":
flickr.com/search/groups/?q=+&m=pool&w=3442746979...

Discover the most "interestaculous" photo in a pool:
flickr.com/search/groups/?q=+&m=pool&w=3442746979...

If you remember the "old" version of "everyone's photos", and miss it?
flickr.com/search/?q=+&s=rec&ss=2&ct=6&z=t

I'll stop with the most INTERESTING PHOTO EVAR!:
flickr.com/search/?q=+&z=t&ss=2&ct=6&s=int

PHOTO & CO (by photo&amp;co)

and the close 3rd, phew! Go George!

Combined with advanced search, a contact's stream AS THUMBNAILS:
flickr.com/search/?q=+&w=12037949632%40N01&z=t&am...

Have oldschool flickr-cred? Find out where you rank by join-date (if you are in the first 4,000 or so)

For your own photos
What Brenda Anderson said would be one method, but it uses square thumbs. If you want proper-aspect thumbs you can use the search hack I mentioned... you'll have to edit the url to contain your own NSID though:

flickr.com/search/?q=+&w=37718677955%40N01&z=t&am...

This was built up using Search. Set it to your photostream. Search within TEXT. Type something simply there. Then regardless of results change the URL by removing that "something simple" and replacing it with "+". Hit Enter. To get them to order same as your stream you can click "most recent" at this point.

There is no link to get to this. Hence why it is a *trick*. ;-)

Putting the "+" in the search field itself will not result in the same behavior. You'll just get photos with pluses in the description/title.

For contacts photos as thumbnails
It's the same process except start from the "Advanced Search" and select the person to display in the dropdown first.

It could also be something on flickr's end, perhaps they are stripping leading and trailing padding prior to the query... in which case our "space" query turns into a null-string query... which could either match everything, or nothing, depending on the database properties I'm sure. The fact it gives us the "space" character back in the text field of the result makes me think it's actually searching for it though.

Eli the Bearded  Pro User  says:

The first use of this was for searching usernames, and it is clearly returning users with no spaces in the name. I think it saves a "printable" version to use in the rendered page but uses a normalized (to null) version for the search.

(First use I know of: me about two months and posted about in a 10 million photos topic. It is interesting to see the idea spread.)

Not exactly a Tip or Trick but a change in how flickr informs you about Testimonials.

In the good old days I found out by seeing a message on my home page but nowadays you have to check the Testimonial page under your Profile. I found one that's probably been waiting there for ages. When did you last check your Testimonial page?

As did I. Flickr needs to have a better way of alerting people about testimonials. I have no idea how long that was there.

It's not username, it's the unique url, like flickr.com/lwr not flick.com/Leo Reynolds. You don't have a URL for your account. You can set one up, permanently (it can never be changed) here, www.flickr.com/profile_url.gne

I learnt about a testimonial put on my page at the weekend because the person who did it wrote to me yesterday to tell me about it. Otherwise I would never have known!
