Ok, well maybe the smiling dogs can wait.
But what about the World Beach Project?
from the V&A's website:
'Devised by artist Sue Lawty in association with the V&A, the World Beach Project is a global art project open to anybody, anywhere, of any age, building on the experience many of us have had on holiday of making patterns on beaches and shorelines.'
and some of the beachy art installations on flickr:
There are instructions on how you can join in and make your own beach art, and a world map where you can upload your own project and see what others have made on beaches all over the world.

Hi Heather,
I liked your blog post on Asuka light festival. It is festival of lights in India this weekend. It is called Deepavali (in south India) or Diwali in North India. All over India, people will light oil lamps, crackers. The fireworks that happen during these days is spectacular. It is one of the biggest festivals in India.
Please consider a post on this festival. . Some interesting snaps I could find are. The tags I used for searching are Deepvali and Diwali.

I loved the post on the lights festival as well, and would like to mention that the Berlin Festival of Lights
www.city-stiftung-berlin.eu/index.php?id=2&sprache=1
is going on this weekend (and into next week) as well. It's the 5th anniversary and the largest one so far. I'm eagerly looking forward to the event and the many photos that are going to be on Flickr.
Side note - November 9, 2009 is the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall. I'd also look forward to seeing some posts of the "then" and "now" variety from Flickr sites.

The 6 Million People project has been asking photographers from across Flickr to curate their favorite portraits from among the more than 100,000 in the group. Currently there have been seven created, with several more due for opening in the next week or two. Past curators include the phenomenally talented Emaitches, Flickr playboy beebo wallace and many others. Please check out all 7, and keep your eye on this space for more to follow every week.
Here's a partial selection of gallery photos during the first month.

The long-running Spotlight Seven series returns from an extended hiatus this week with a feature about Rémi Tinel, known as Ray maï on Flickr. Ray has been a photographer since he was a child, but really took up interest when he got his first compact digital camera. An avid portrait photographer, many of his photos feature the very young and very old, for reasons that might be a little surprising. An excerpt from his interview with smoothdude.
4) Your portraiture seems to focus on the very young and the very old. What draws you to those two ends of the the spectrum.
Well, I try to make interesting pictures, different than what the others photographers usually show, otherwise, there is no sense to practice photography. I look after emotional pictures, and directly, it leads me to children, because they like overall to play with the camera, it is game for them, and then to rather old people, as we can read their life (suffering, happiness) in their glances. Generally, they’re also the most eager to be a model.
Here are a few selections from Ray's feature. It was really hard to choose my favorite, because each one is engaging in its own way. Make sure you read the entire interview and view Ray's 10 selected portraits-- I highly recommend viewing them full-screen as a slideshow.

www.flickr.com/groups/spotlight_seven/discuss/72157622631...
Spotlight Seven is a regular interview and photo series, featuring 10 portraits from one photographer and accompanied by a 10 question interview. With over 30 features so far, a wonderful breadth of portraits is available from photographers worldwide, each with a style his or her own. Each exhibit is curated either by talented New York City photographer Daniel Krieger (aka smoothdude) or one of the artists previously featured in the group. Sponsored by the 6 Million People project, Spotlight Seven has created its own presence on Flickr as the home of sign of its finest portrait photography. To make sure you never miss a feature, sign up for the newsletter, bookmark the blog or just check the group regularly.

Embedded Flickr Photographers
In November of 2008 the DFW Area Meetup flickrazzi went to Waxahachie, Texas to shoot an annual WWII reenactment. One of the reenactors found the group's photos on Flickr and invited them to be "war correspondents" this year.
"A chance to get on the other side of the caution tape and inside the action? Heck yeah!" said the group. So, they dressed up in khaki and headed back to Waxahachie for this year's Veteran's Day weekend celebration.
Each photographer had a mission from riding with General Patton to covering each of the units (American, Russian, German). Those not in "uniform" took up positions on the perimeter - including a bridge above the action. Together the embedded photographers took thousands of photos. They handed out business cards with the newly established Flickr group address and encouraged the reenactors who were taking pictures during the day to join up and include their shots in the pool.
www.flickr.com/groups/waxww2weekend2009/
As a result, there have been about a dozen new Flickr memberships and the DFW Area Meetup group is looking forward to making this an annual event.
Here are a few of the many great vintage looking photos from last weekend:

Turn off the TV, put the kids to bed and take the phone off the hook. Then give yourself 20 or 30 minutes to read & really comprehend DerrickT's interview in Spotlight Seven, the 40th in the series. We've had some amazing photographers featured over the past 2 years, and I can honestly say that none of the interviews have been as complex, layered and insightful as DerrickT's.
The Artist
When you have some serious time to learn about DerrickT's photography, his process and his thoughts, wander over to his blog. Dig deeper and explore his videos, or just go along for the ride as he Tumbles across the web discovering great images. But for now, I just want to convince you to read his interview and view the photos in the pool.

I can't do the interview justice even with this extended format. So I'll just give a preview, and share half of his response to the first question. Read slowly, and try to appreciate the depth of information that Derrick shares in his layered response.
1) Tell us about one of your flickr sets named: There seems to be a lot of covering and manipulation of the face, what's that all about?
I have always been fascinated with the human condition, in a variety of facets, predominately since I was a teenager, when I started observing and pondering fellow high school students (strange, but true). Since then, there has been an invariable evolution in regards to it, as there is with most anything. One that ponders and contemplates the nature of things and what they subsequently mean often finds oneself wanting to know more, or at least to know as much as possible. I have always been a visionary, primarily starting with words and language, and from there I began experimenting with other "mediums" to see what I could "discover" and create. Thankfully the combination's tend to work wonderfully for me. Obscurity has always been of interest, too, which I feel is a part of the human condition itself; what worlds, labyrinths and galaxies are going on within people's minds, free-flowing thoughts as well as those that are circumspect, what is plaited within the brain. Not to designate the psychological aspects of it all, because I am just as much interested in the emotional and physical aspects of the human condition, as well.
That's really just a taste of what smoothdude & DerrickT have in store for you this week. It's an amazing interview, and worth every second to read. And explore his photos-- a true original on Flickr, you won't be disappointed if you spend hours digging through his work.

As football (aka soccer) engulfs much of the world during the world cup in Sourth Africa, flickr group HCSP is going to be dedicating the pool for a while to the beautiful game.
Brought to you in partnership with Third Floor Gallery, Cardiff and Bank Street Arts, Sheffield, HCSP opens it's doors to football only images for the next two weeks.
Football images submitted to the pool during this period may be featured in slideshows, at both galleries, with Bank Street Arts running projections between 28th June - 17th July. And at a date yet to be decided at the Third Floor Gallery.
To get you started, here's a few images from Magnum's Chris Steele-Perkins, whose exhibition - for the love of the game - is currently being shown at Third Floor Gallery for the duration of the tournament 11 June - 11 July 2010:
www.thirdfloorgallery.com/exhibitions.html

A selection of Chris Steele-Perkins images will also feature in the slideshows.
So go get submitting your street-related football images, and shooting new material. Submissions close on 25th of June.
Normal service to the pool will resume again shortly.
And since no South African World Cup match would be complete without the relentless swarm-like buzz of a stadium full of vuvuzelas, we recommend you view the pool backed with this optional soundtrack.

For the second year, Flickr photographers from the Dallas/Fort Worth Area Meetup group (DAM) were embedded with the troops during Waxahachie's World War II Weekend. The photogs dress in WWII era clothes and carry modern gear as seen in this pic by flat6s.

The two-day annual event in November offered an immersion in the World War II era, with the town square made into an occupied French village, Allied and Axis camps near the train depot, a convoy of military vehicles and a flyover of WWII aircraft. More than 200 actors re-enacted a battle that took place near Nancy, France, in 1944.

Hi,
I have a suggestion for a post on the Flickr blog. 3rd December is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Since it's winter, maybe you could do a post about snow and disabilities. On the one hand, snow can be a pretty insurmountable obstacle for people in wheelchairs or with other physical impairments. Piles of snow on the sidewalks or snow on the street can be the reasons for disabled people not being able to leave their houses. On the other hand, disabled people can achieve great things in the snow (or on ice): from sitski to ice sledge hockey. Here are some photos on the topic that I found in the Flickrverse:

The Jasmine Revolution.
"A desperate act by a young unemployed man on 17 December triggered a much wider series of protests and clashes with the police.
Mohamed Bouazizi set fire to himself when officials in his town prevented him from selling vegetables on the streets of Sidi Bouzid without permission.
This set off protests about jobs in the town, which has an agriculture-based economy in one of the poorest regions of the country.
These demonstrations then spread elsewhere, in a move the government said was being exploited by the opposition.
But the violent response of the authorities - with the police opening fire on demonstrators - appears to have exacerbated anger and ignited further protests.
The unrest is also widely seen as drawing on deep frustration with the ruling elite and the suppression of political freedoms.
The clashes became much more deadly on the weekend of 8-9 January, and then spread to the capital Tunis.
The government says 78 people have been killed in the protests."
Source:BBC World News
The unrest has moved to Jordan, Morocco, and Egypt.

Because of their age they're often diminished and deemed unworthy and sometimes even called ignorant or unfit for an activity or hobby that takes maturity like photography. I think to give them a feature on the Flickr Blog would help keep a select few teen's spirits up and give them much needed publicity when they're often overlooked for something as little as their age.
Thanks a lot,
Ben Walker

As mentioned before, I think Flickr should also ADD an education feature, for successive photos/images which can be teaching aids, possibly with... attached video clips?
Education of the present and future will be "Learn at your own pace", and "distance learning". Why go to a classroom when you can be educated on the bus ride to the gym? Or in your own home?
Why do bright students get bored? Because their learning ability far surpasses the teachers ability to try and teach 40 people in a classroom as opposed to reaching... one at a time.
Flickr can be a part of that remote learning, remote education wave.
Can I help you accomplish this, as if you need help? (I know you don't, you fully understand the concept)
Flickr is only in its infancy.

The Charity Print Auctions group has launched a Japan Earthquake and Tsunami appeal, calling for photographers to donate prints or bid on the works of others in aid of charity.
Several thousands of USD have been raised so far, and the auctions have only been open for a couple of days.
We've set up a twitter account to help spread the word: @CPA4Japan
But a post on the flickr blog would really be fantastic and help us raise awareness of the cause.

Is there a rule against being mentioned on the Flickr Blog twice in one week? Well, shouldn't matter, I'm only about 2% of this project.
www.flickr.com/groups/theicebox/discuss/72157626372099641/
Early last summer, new Icebox member Chris Menz suggested that we cubes publish a "book for good" with our photographs. Everyone was excited. Just as the project began, we suffered a major setback as our good friend & fellow photographer Dave Hohler passed away. Instantly, we collectively decided to dedicate the book to Dave, use one of his photos for the cover and donate all proceeds to cancer charities.
We'd each contribute 3 photos that had survived the rigors of The Icebox. Then an editor would choose about 70 photos, carefully choosing images-- 1 or 2 from each contributor-- that would pair well with it's match on the opposite page. Through many fits & bursts, it all came together, with a dozen members making substantial contributions-- creating the back cover, designing the layout, writing essays, editing, proof reading and coordinating. A true collaborative effort. And now, it's ready for order.
Back Cover
The books look phenomenal, and the proceeds go towards a great cause. Of course, I need to thank the 60+ photographers that have contributed. Thank you! We are a global bunch, as this map of where we live (or where we're from) clearly demonstrates.
OK, enough of that. How about a look at some more of the photos included in the book? Enjoy.

I would propose to flickr STAFF, that they do a blog feature, or even plural, features...on the Revere Beach National Sandsculpting Festival. It is an extraordinary event held each year at the very frist Public Beach in the United States of America. The master sculptors include the World champion as well as a host of other champions. It is put on each year by then non-profit Revere Beach partnership organization and is free for all who visit. Just yesterday they started contstruction of the centerpiece design and it seems to have a Cinderella feel to it. The competition begins Wednesday, and the participants have fours days to complete their master sand works. They trul are spectacular and offer a world of photographic opportunities.
see these for more early construction...

Here is a link to some of last years entries...

and the slideshow as well..

This year's participants include master sculptors from Canada, Portugal, France and the US. Its a golden opportunity for some fun blogs, and I would be more than happy to provide as much information as you need. The judging is Saturday evening, July 16,2011, when they light the castles and have fireworks for everyone. Live entertainment is provided as well over the weekend beginning Friday with movie night. What do you say flickr? Should make for some great blogs.
Thank you so much for your consideration.

I just stumbled across a project that one of my contacts is running, getting vintage photos identified and then returning them to their families. Imagine someone suddenly contacting you to say they had found a picture of your great, great, great grandfather?!
Check out the Rescued photos set, with examples like this one that spent 100 years in Vermont but has now been returned to Amasa's great great great granddaughter in Wisconsin
And then the ones that still haven't been reunited in the Seeking descendants set, like these cute little Pharmer children

this is caroline helm.
in 1964, at 16 years her kidneys failed her. dialysis was not widely available, and being underage, she was not selected for treatment.
however since the engineer albert babb, who constructed dialysis systems, was a friend of caroline's father, she received the first home hemodialysis machine. she lived another 4 years, completing high school and another three years of college.
Northwest Kidney Centers History's photostream contains the only photographs of this brave young lady that i have seen so far.
