I found out a while ago that Tom Hanks likes to collect typewriters. So everytime I see one now I get reminded of that fact. Here's two I've come across randomly in the past week:

Funny how they are both composed the same!

After browsing through some of the amazing shots in the New York Public Library addition to the Flickr Commons,
I ended up looking at this rather intriguing set:

"A walking tour at heart, the Fireladders of Soho was created in New York in 2005—2006. The ladders themselves collectively form a symbolic escape route for the artist, who used work breaks to escape from the basement of a Soho retail store to capture the photos with a mobile phone camera. Later the images were translated into drawings and organized for presentation on the internet."

From a poem by James Whitcomb Riley we get the expression, "Frost on the Pumpkin". Here are images to illustrate that phrase from the Porch Pumpkin pool. They are outdoors on porches with frost or snow, in some cases, a lot of snow!

note the time on many of these- I was out walking in the snow at 2am, and there were people building snowmen and making snow angels on the sidewalk all the way up my street

As a backpacker every time I visit a new country I make a point of trying the local dishes. I have often found that there tend to be interesting stories surrounding meals and I think that photos of food with descriptions that tell their story would be a great idea.
I was once scammed by an old Vietnamese man who singled me out on the street and told me he wanted to have a chat. I was cautious to begin with, but I was soon lulled into a false sense of security when he started asking me questions about where I was from, etc. Not long after he invited me to join him for some food. We sat and ate some delicious wood fired chicken skewers, served with peanut sauce, chilli and rice paper. We chatted about our families and our home towns. Then, on the way back, he asked me if I could possibly buy some wine for his local temple. Completely off guard due to his kindness and genuine demeanour I agreed. However the wine cost $50 and I was made to scrape every last coin out of my wallet to pay for it! But the main thing that really sticks in my mind from that story is how delicious the chicken skewers were.
If only I had the time to whip out the camera and get a photo of those culinary delights.

Just been looking at the Creative Commons photos on Flickr, and there are 96,590,910 photos with a CC licence at present.
I'd like to see a blog post when Flickr reaches the big 100,000,000, as this would be great publicity for both CC and Flickr, and would encourage more people to add their photos to the Commons.

Flickr has a great repository of natural history shots, but I've only ever seen birds and squirrels on the blog (there's probably been other things, but a search has come up with very little). I'm a herpetologist, and would love to see a blog entry on some of the more obscure animals on Flickr. Here are some of my favourites, but have a look around at what is to offer.

This is the true face of Britain. That's the promise of the Thousand Portraits project from Carlo and Eamon. And they deliver on the promise. I'll let them describe the project:
Our project is a true portrait of Britain created by photographing 1,000 people. We stopped everyone who crossed our path on the streets of London, excluding nobody, asking the same question more than fifteen hundred times. In a moment where recession is the main subject of every discussion, it was striking to come across such positive attitude.
Now, these are not 1000 ordinary portraits. I've known Eamon on Flickr for a long time, and he was the premier artist in the Spotlight Seven group when he went by 'stpiduko'. Now known as Fabulous Muscles on Flickr, Twitter and his blog, the one constant has been his exceptional photography. Eamon is a film aficionado, and along with Carlo, they shot all 1000 portraits using a Nikon F90X with a 50mm f/1.4 lens. That worked out to about 1 photo every 40 seconds, according to his blog entry.

Eamon has been a part of the 6 Million People project for a long time, and quickly become one of the most prolific contributors when he added all 1000 portraits from that weekend and a few dozen more-- he doesn't stop! There are so many ways to view these photos. See them in Carlo's set, in Eamon's set, or in a video. The video is actually viewable in three different spots-- full-length on Vimeo or Youtube, or an abridged version is available right on Flickr.

The other half of the Thousand Portraits team is Carlo Nicora, a stubborn, idealistic, passionate polyhedric person. Or something like that. An Italian trasnplant reassembling his life in England, Carlo can easily be found on Twitter and Flickr as well. I've just discovered Carlo's work, and based on what I've seen so far, it will be a joy to explore it. What's really amazing is that these guys have made ALL 1000 portraits freely available for any non-commercial use, so you can use these photos to make your own videos, or to tell your own story, or for anything else. So on behalf of myself, the other members of the Six Million People project, Flickrites worldwide and photo lovers everywhere, I'd like to thank Carlo & Eamon for putting together a fantastic project and for sharing it with the world. Thanks guys! Now enjoy the video.

A flickr acquaintance of mine, timmelm, had a Flickr photo of his chosen for a New Zealand stamp honoring the 50th anniversary of the Auckland Harbour Bridge. The stamp was issued today!

Tim writes: I received an fmail some time a go out of the blue from a guy I did not know asking me if he could use my photo in a proposal for a stamp series celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Auckland Harbour Bridge. I said sure, go ahead, not really thinking it was likely to come to something. I was blown away when he got back to me several weeks later saying it was accepted and would go ahead. I emailed him an original of the shot which he edited and this is the proof for the final stamp. The stamp goes public on the 1st of May.

Flickr member dogfaceboy, photographer, writer, artist, and self-proclaimed cake addict, has written a book about cake. Not about making it, but about eating it. It's been out for a month (published by Simon & Schuster), and many of us flickrites (including me) have read it - it's just as delicious as the frosted stuff itself! Apart from an awesome read it also contains quite a few of her photos which have previously appeared on flickr.
And finally, there's a flickr group for everyone who's read it - "Let them read cake":

"A couple of weeks ago I recieved an email from a lady called Faye on flickr. She asked me if she could use one of my images for a painting, and I checked out her stream and was blown away, so of course I said yes. Today she linked me to the final painting - it is amazing!! Thankyou so much Faye!

OK
So, a few folks from the Pittsburgh Flickr group sought out to capture these Furry convention goers. It's tough, the furries don't like to be photographed and I believe what goes on inside the convention walls is pretty hush-hush.

Since yesterday (and until October), the One and Other project is happening on the fourth plinth of Trafalgar Square, London. The website has explanations and a live webcam.
Surely, interesting material from there will start popping up on Flickr. Perhaps this is blog material? What would be nice about it is that people will still be able to see it for themselves after finding it on the blog.
A search for recent stuff tagged "fourthplinth" is already promising:
www.flickr.com/search/?q=fourthplinth&ss=2&ct=3&a...
Description from the website:
This summer, sculptor Antony Gormley invites you to help create an astonishing living monument. He is asking the people of the UK to occupy the empty Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square in London, a space normally reserved for statues of Kings and Generals. They will become an image of themselves, and a representation of the whole of humanity. Every hour, 24 hours a day, for 100 days without a break, a different person will make the Plinth their own.
(Note: I have no connection to this whatsoever. I don't even live in London.)

This girl takes the best figure and little cardboard robot photos. It would be a shame if more people didn't know about her work. Seriously! It's very similar in style to "My sweet toof."

Today I found out about the art of kyaraben - making elaborately designed bento!

Adapted from Wikipedia: "a shortened form of character bento, Kyaraben is arranged bento which features food decorated to look like people, characters from popular media, animals, and plants.
Originally, a decorated bento was intended to arouse interest from children in their food and to encourage a wider range of eating habits. It has now evolved to the point where national contests are held, from which kyaraben artists can gain fame and become invited seminar speakers and authors on the subject".

Same Subject, Different Results
We have a group for images of one ship, The Margaret Todd, docked in one location, Bar Harbor, Maine.
So all of the pictures of her are going to look alike, right? Not.so.much. Our group's talented photographers achieve varying effects.

Digital photography has really revolutionized how underwater photography is done. It also makes it much more affordable with all the cheap compact camera housings made available in the market. Before this the cost of taking uw photos is so prohibitive only the lucky few get to enjoy the hobby. Now almost diver carries a camera. It is unbelievable.
I know Flickr blog has carried some articles on underwater subjects before, but not the "serious" stuff. This group FiNS Magazine group probably has some of the best uw image collections anywhere in Flickr. It is really well worth taking a look. Here are some samples from their photo of the day collection:

I live just a few blocks from the Empire State Plaza in Albany New York. This amazing complex of buildings seems to be little known in the world, although it's performing arts center "The Egg" was recently spotlighted on Popular Mechanics websites as one of 18 strange buildings in the world. Here are just a few shots of the Empire State Plaza.

The Minnesota State Fair started last Thursday and runs through Labor Day 2009. It is the largest state fair in the U.S. (based on daily average attendance).
It features a beautiful midway:
Lots of foods on a stick:
Busts of butter:
Animals galore:
And amazing works of seed art (often highly political):

I'd like to suggest a topic for the Flickr blog and 'Groups we've noticed' - Parks and Protected Areas
This topic will be quite popular with the broadcast of the new PBS series later this month. Also, 2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity.
A while back I created two groups to showcase parks around the world, so I'm in favor of this particular focal point!
