So depressing. Seriously depressing.
I was okay with Yahoo buying Flickr because I've had good experiences with Yahoo products and am a long-time user.
I have nothing but terrible experiences with Microsoft consumer products (their Enterprise stuff is a mixed bag).
This does not bode well for the future of Flickr, me thinks. Unless they (MS) leave it completely alone, I can't think of a single positive aspect to the Microsoft buyout as far as Flickr is concerned.
Anyone able to cheer me up?

1) deal is just an offer, still speculative
(MS wants/needs, Yahoo does not need)
2) yahoo shareholders still need to consider, approve or quash
3) and of course, subject to regulatory approval
i'm curious where this is gonna go but not going to get my knickers in a knot despite my feelings for MS.

Actually, as much as I hate the evil empire from Redmond, I soubt that things at flickr would get any worse than after the Yahoo takeover. I n case the deal goes through, they might even get better, because let's face it, Flickr can't hardly get any worse than with Y! (German censorship anyone?)

Everything Microsoft touches becomes more inconvenient and cumbersome to use. I expect the Flickr interface will change, and a host of useless features will be thrust upon it. I also expect a big sidebar full of buttons with links to all sorts of stuff that has nothing to do with Flickr.

That aside, M$'s Photosynth exludes Mac/OSX users, and frankly I'm not at all impressed with MicroSloth's legacy-bound, overcoded bloatware (being a longtime Mac user). That may have nothing to do with Flickr, but M$ re-invents everything it consumes.

I started just after Yahoo acquired Flickr and it hasn't been too bad. But the thought of Microsoft getting their hands on Flickr makes my skin crawl. Their products may be dominant but their 'decent' at best and at their worst their 'functionality' sucks!

I was seriously going to post a "WTF Yahoo! Don't go under and take Flickr with you!" thread after reading about Yahoo's latest gloom and doom results and instead woke up to this.
It's going to happen, period, unless Yahoo finds a better offer. There's this thing called Fiduciary Responsibility to the Shareholders and when the boat is sinking and someone throws a candy-coated lifesaver, it's actually against the law to ignore the buyout offer.
Like everyone else, I'll be watching, but honestly, I survived the Yahoo! transition and my overall dislike for both companies is about the same. If the Flickr teams stays in place after a buyout, that's a good sign to me that I can stay, too.

As mentioned elsewhere (I can't find it now) - the Faceball developers at Flickr will not tolerate Microsoft's rigid corporate culture and quite rightly bail - Yahoo! may have allowed them to keep their vision and creative processes, but Microsoft will not.

I am a supporter of Free Software and Open Standards. What Microsoft has done over the last several years to discredit people involved with Linux and the Open Source has been completely unacceptable.
If Microsoft does buy Yahoo, I will be cancelling my account when it happens and migrating to Smugmug, which is also hosted on Linux.
Hopefully others that do not believe in Microsoft's unfair business practices and tactics will do similar.

I noticed my comment would probably be greeted by one of the usual suspects yelling at me for making it in the wrong place. I haven't got all day to wade through all the obfuscation. I've joined FlickrCentral specially in the hope that it's the right place to say I that I'm sorry but not surprised that this threat has come upon Flickr so soon.

I wasn't happy when Yahoo acquired Flickr and I'm desperately sorry that Microsoft wants to buy Yahoo. I will not renew my subscription if they really gonna do it. Sorry Flickr, but Microsoft is really one of the last companies where I wanna host my pictures.

I'm really not a Microsoft fan, but the last few months of changes with Flickr has not been good under Yahoo leadership. The maps functionality changes have hundreds of commenters (and probably thousands of users) up in arms. My only hope here is that they look at what a great vocal community Flickr built and leverage that to make some strategic changes. I don't believe if MS was at the helm, Flickr paying customers would have been used as beta testers for changes to major sections of the site, but time may prove me wrong.
What am I hoping for in the end - replace the map team - I know that is rough - sorry, but they are terrible on user interface and strategic direction. I will say that I can guarantee MS will want to leverage Silverlight (flash equivalent) on the sites they own, so we could be in for some major development changes if the deal goes through.

NO. There are other topics in the forum related to specualtion about the potential changes in ownership of flickr-yahoo. Locked because of inactivity.
I didn't comment on those threads but of course it is the appropriate place to go with your concerns about what is in the news that is related to flickr. At the very least they could have responded by saying it is still speculation. The forum is the first place you should go if you are looking for official responses to what is in the news. Yes, there were a lot of flickr users weighing in with their opinions about it, most of it negative but not all of it negative.
If the decision hasn't been made yet is the opinions of consumers of such low value that it needs to be deleted ?? I didn't see anything particularly abusive in those threads. The second one was unnecessary maybe but so what?
And I'm sure there were people who were looking for a response from flickr re this news report.

re. cage rattling
i've been rattling my cage for 17 days now, i think it might be futile though as noone can hear me in this makeshift basement dungeon underneath a nondescript suburban council house on the outskirts of swindon.
i'm in a bit of a pickle, but it's not a meteor-esque worst case scenario just yet. that stroke of fortune belongs to the bloke in a gimp suit who is rattling his own cage next to mine.
perhaps if microsoft take over yahoo/flickr, they'll send someone to come round and help me? but i think it's more likely that he'll crash halfway through completing the operation.

I'll repost this here - This is in the news again - as a firm offer at 62% over current Yahoo stock price, so will likely go through.
And may not be a regulatory issue acording to buzz on business networks, given how huge Google already is in the search engine area.
It's said to be in order to get more search engine access and compete better with Google.
Microsoft Vista has an editing/organizing program included, called Windows Photo Gallery. Similar stuff to Picassa. It also lets you upload pics to Windows Live Spaces (their online blogging/social networking tool) and to Flickr. Two different targets, one more general blogging, the other photo oriented.
If Microsoft buys Yahoo they will initially focus on the search engine area. Yahoo has pretty well left the Flickr part alone, hopefully Microsoft will do the same.

Yahoo! should open-source a version of the flickr application at once making this code freely available for anyone to run on their own webserver.
This represents the best hope that ecosystems of interconnected flickr universes could continue to co-exist in peace far from the control of the evil, evil empire...
Jeez, this sounds like a dogfood deal dreamt up by a bunch of clueless, greedy M&A analysts in the hope of making a quick buck under the banner of saving a crumbling pillar of corporate desktop monolopoly overtaken by the internet age.

I REALLY, REALLY hope they leave Flickr alone. I believe they want the search engine more than anything, and Flickr is such an "entity" on it's own, I hope they're not stupid enough to mess with it. I'm just afraid they might get some of the flickr engineers to develop a "msn photo" website and flickr get's slowly abandoned by the tech guys and starts to crawl to an inevitable death. :-(

Small question--is humor allowed in this discussion, or do we have to keep it serious and high-tension? I mistakenly assumed, in a Help Forum discussion, that a discussion that clearly had found a conclusion (that is, help had been rendered) could stand a light moment or two before being, rightfully, closed by flickr staff. Before you decide who should never have existed or who has never invented anything you might want to do some research. Google hasn't invented anything, just made their implementations a little better than the last guy, Apple just makes their stuff more expensive and closed. Sony didn't invent home theater. Imagine that - they're doing the same thing Microsoft does, maybe better maybe not time will tell. I use a lot of non-MS products every day because they are the best available tool, I also use a number of MS products for the same reason. We live in a capitalist world, there are lots of ways to succeed and every single one will make people hate you. Personally I'll take Steve Ballmer over Steve Jobs any day.

these macro-level machinations have little effect on end-level users. Just as with the giant tempest in a teapot we had here over Yahoo, I predict not much will come of this either... a few people will leave in a snit, and far more will announce they are going to leave and then carry on.

You got to be kidding me. Balmer over Jobs? Jobs took back Apple from a executive that's only experience was selling soda water and turned the company (Apple) around introducing to us. OSX, Ipod and the Iphone. Jobs made the Apple's stock (value) boom. What has Balmer done? Practice Monopolist attacks on other companies including open source. Get sued by the EU. Watch their stock fall, loose money and buy companies that have innovation and close them down.

I'm a Mac user but I've nothing against Microsoft, I just enjoy using a Mac more than a PC. If Yahoo! is strapped for cash then it could be a pretty good deal for them.
