If there is one city that is full of Photographers...and tourists...it is Washington DC and the surrounding area. What are these people trying to stop? It seems they only "catch" their own citizens.

Well, "terrorists" and "tourists" sort of sound similar; if you've seen the sort of idiots working in the government it shouldn't be surprising that this would confuse them.

That's it! Everyone in the nation with a camera should henceforth take pictures of every damned office building in the country. The Big-Brother types can't stop all 300 million of us...

I visited your photostream as requested.
You seem to be unaware that on Flickr you are not allowed to take pictures of garden gnomes. It's on the secret list of Subjects That May Never Be Photographed.

There was a fascinating discussion about this topic, photog's rights and obligations, etc. in the Strobist group (http://www.flickr.com/groups/strobist/discuss/72157600359124224/)
I came away from the discussion with the (unschooled but probably valid) opinion that, if the picture was taken in a public way (street, sidewalk, etc), they (local or federal authorities) can NOT stop you from taking the picture or make you delete the pictures in the camera.
There is a legal rights group in Flickr someplace (http://www.flickr.com/groups/lawgroup/discuss/72157600204863211/) , and there is a pdf document that spells out your rights as a photographer: www.krages.com/phoright.htm. You should know your rights. You should also apply common sense to any situation unless you're willing to push it. You also must understand that if a police officer asks for ID, you MUST provide it.
I find it interesting that I can google the DARPA address and show the sat picture www.google.com/maps?q=3701+N+Fairfax+Dr,+Arlington,+VA+22...
The person who was stopped has an interesting blog entry mccammon.org/keith/2007/07/11/do-not-photograph-3701-n-fa.... for more info about the issue, etc.
Know your rights. Exercise common sense. I keep a copy of the rights pdf in my camera bag. Who knows, it may help. Hope it helps,
Dave

Hmm...so basically I'll have no idea that I took a photo of a "forbidden building" til the feds come after me? How nice...guess I should take my photo of the Des Moines capitol down..I bet it's on "The List."

It's all very good to know that the government can't seize people for no reason, throw them in a military prison without charging them, and revoke habeas corpus because it says so in the Constitution, but unfortunately a printout of a pdf isn't going to help you if they decide to do it anyway.

dschlier - I don't know what rock you've been hiding under, but wooble is correct - the Constitution has been used as TP by those in Washington for years now. If you take a photo of a building they don't want you to and you put up a fight, you will lose, and possibly "disappear." If you're lucky, it'll be in a jail in the USA on whatever charges they feel like. If you're not lucky, you won't be seen again - it's called "Extraordinary Rendition" and there are a bunch of CIA agents about to get a lot of plastic surgery and new identities because of it.

same with in washington the state.
my grandparents live in between 3 military bases out there and when by the military shipyard u arent allowed to take fotos either. when u are on th e shipyard grounds...if u were able to get past security...u cant have any type of electronical device with u..no fone gameboys whatever...
would be kinda strange to be unknowing to this and yer just goin to take a pic of something and then BOOM a random person is there like yer a criminal. thats what sucks about not knowing certain laws about certain places.

~Saber~ I'm sorry, but you have some very wrong information.
The only place you're not allowed to take cameraphones/cellphones and cameras is certain areas on "lower base" on Bangor. I'm not sure where you got the information about gameboys and such. That's just not true.
edit: and this part, "when u are on th e shipyard grounds...if u were able to get past security"
The only way to get on the "shipyard grounds" (I'm assuming you mean PSNS, aka NBK-Bremerton) is to get past security - which you can do, as long as you have the proper credentials.

I just recently crossed the border from the US to Canada and back. They said at the place that you cross the border that you aren't allowed to take pictures of ANYTHING there. People, cars, flags, buildings, anything at all. And if they see a camera in your car, they will look at the pictures, and or confiscate the camera. It seems weird. All it is, is a building and a toll booth.

But a highly confidential toll booth.
As a tractor, I dislike the fact anyone can drive past a tractor and just take a photo of it.
Look in Explore and you'll see a whole consortium of tractor shots and many of them I'd rate as distasteful, nay offensive pornography. And people just leave comments like 'Lovely capture' or 'Well done'.
This is an outrage when a plain Jane toll booth is deemed by the authorities to be 'forbidden' yet a tractor who is caught exposing his/herself in an objectionable manner is likely to be HDR'ed and end up on Explore with a hundred gif awards.

Learn your equipment folks theres many ways of faking deleting pics and making someone think your in complince with what there asking you to do. I have had to do it a few times. Just remember never let the camera out of your hands or control. But the bottom line its Fd up we have to deal with these situations in the first place and another reason I moved far away from DC.

if i were there, i would be organising a mass visit to take pics.. nothing like 100 people decending on a place to freak out the local security :)

: Do you think this stops at the D.C. borders? New York will enact (or enacted already) a law to keep people from photographing without a permit. It's written sufficiently vague so as to at least lead uninformed security personnel to bug the hell out of people on a continuous basis.

Forbidden to photograph "hidden" or "secret" building is the best way to reveal their presence and draw attention on whatever could happen inside.
If i was a terrorist , or a criminal,i would love the bureaucrats that had that idea...how to discover where is exactly my target?
Cristal clear, must be that place that could not be photographed !!
World seems really full of idiots

I'll have to take down my photographs of the United States Capitol from my photostream. Surely that is on the "Illegal to Photograph" list. And the guard at the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier. He's a member of the military and the tomb is in a cemetery administered by the United States Army. All of Arlington National Cemetery has to be on that list.
It's ridiculous that people are being stopped for taking photographs from public places. I had once been stopped for taking photos of girls performing at a dance recital that was performed in public and of fall colors in an upscale neighborhood, with the cop telling me it was against city ordinance to photograph private property without the owner's permission when, in fact, there was no such ordinance.

There are two silly things in this thread. The first is that there are buildings that you cannot know you cannot take photos of. The second is the extrapolation that all Federal buildings are on the list.
Actually, there are three silly things. Hello ♥ shhexycolin ♥ .

Anyway come over here where I've seen on occasions tourists ask (and have) security or police take photos of them.
I did peeve the cop though when I suggested I took a photo of him taking photos of tourists...
