Check out today's CNN homepage to read the interview with Stewart Butterfield co-creator of Flickr.com.

Here's the link:

Thanks for the link. That part certainly got my attention:

Butterfield: (...) But also to help the users make money -- that's something we haven't actually started yet but we've spent a long time thinking about it. Everyday we see people buying photos from Flickr users and it's a very complicated and difficult and frustrating process for both sides. It's something we'll be looking at more closely and probably doing some stuff in the next year.

CNN: So if you will be taking a commission from users' photos, will Flickr become more like a photo agency?

Butterfield: We'll see how it evolves. To a large extent we're just making it up as we go along now and we don't have a very obvious and ready answer for what role Flickr will play in that. But because we do see it happening every day with news photography and travel photos, it's certainly something that makes a lot of sense for us to get into.

what's so bad about "complicated, difficult and frustrating" ? Once things get easy and everybody gets in the game then the price goes way down.

i think a system that rewards skill and quality over capital and hustle is a better system.

i think more of a system that protects buyer and seller is the intended effect...

the photographer is compensated and given due recognition

the buyer gets the image and is able to use it based on the rights given the buyer

Why can't you attach a agreement that protects flickr and yahoo from any legal action and just use paypal....why is the purchase and sale of photographs ...."difficult"???

you're being unclear.

are you saying that:

"it would be easy for flickr to implement a system for the buying and selling of photographs"

or

"right now, with communication system in place other than flickr mail and profile information, selling photos via flickr is easy"

Points taken.....I think yahoo auctions provides a model for buying and selling that would be easy for Yahoo and flickr to adapt to the buying and selling of photographs..

I am not trying to provide a perfect solution but I think this is a proven solution easy to adapt and implement by flickr and yahoo.

It does not have to be a paypal acct ...just effective.

flickr has a very critical and informed populace who, quite frankly, expect near perfection.

fortunately, flickr staff have an amazing track record on delivering very close to or exceeding these expectations when they deliver on things.

it'd be relatively for them to release something 'okay' yahoo auctions knock off that would likely piss off the ultra-sensitive people here .. or they could develop something uniquely crafted to the needs of flickr members, which is relatively difficult.

if you read any of the previous discussions of this feature, there are a host of different attitudes toward the "commercialization" of flickr. these are very difficult waters to navigate.

Striatic:

I think the people who participate in the " commercial " realm of Yahoo auctions are critical and informed as well . I have read the many different views and I cannot escape the conclusion that as Flickr continues to grow the founders and staff may struggle with the reality that they cannot please everyone....Note the recent changes to the limit of groups a picture could be posted to. Whether one agrees or disagrees with their decision is not the point . A decision had to be made...My sense is that simply if people want to do more ...they may have to pay more. It is the founders and staff responsiblitity on
how to move forward with Flickr. When I post my pictures . I agree to play by their rules.

Interesting interview. He did well considering how bad those questions were.

Appearently its cool to ask a lot about Web 2.0 and know nothing about the subject your interviewing for - Stewart's responses were very good though.
