It also appears that these folks never take their clothes off either.

Maybe they are not so open minded, it's just a cover to show they supposedly have nothing to hide :-)

I would stipulate that they hire actors to pretend to be normal people and put those downstairs, while all of the crazy stuff happens around back.

Well.. I`m Dutch, but not naked. Besides no naked Dutchman to see in your set. Promotion of your photos or just a poor try to be funny. :)

I'd like to be Dutch, I could say 'Yahhh, for suuure' and get away with it.
Is it good being Dutch, anyone? It sucks being English...
If I took pics of people through their windows in my town, I'd get seriously hurt. Good for you, Daniel... but can we see the pics where the subjects aren't so, well, dressed?

Chill out. Maybe spend a few days over the border in Belgium :-)

I`m always chilled out, Gert. I have the age for that. I can`t have stupidity. I have the age for that too. I`m full of humor, I`m Dutch. I once was a cabaret performer twenty years ago, so nobody should have the need to take me serious.
I love the Flanders, they can`t help they are... how can I say that diplomatic? Lovable?
I love the English too, on number one dear Prince Charles and his darling wife Camilla.
But TIROL?? With all that Tiroler music, lederhosen and little green hats with a tiny feather...? I don`t think so. But I do love The Sound of Music. And naked man, from everywhere. But only if they are beautiful and gay. LOL
Edited because I forgot a .

Euh, maybe I am missing something but whether they have curtains drawn or not, whether they are open-minded or not, whether you let them see you taking pictures or not, the fact remains that they are in their own homes and I have to wonder how many realized you intended on posting these pictures on the Web for the whole world to see.

These are nice photos- but what about their personal privacy? I am sure they have no curtains because they don't mind people looking through or walking by their windows. But what about the whole world looking at them through the internet? I'm Not bashing your photos- its just a little scarey that you can take a cultural goodness (ie they are open and friendly people) and in a way expose that over the internet and forums and take away that cultural privacy.

Dutchman here. The 'no curtains' thing is very untrue, these days. Used to be true, but now lots of people have them. I think it used to be because of people not wanting others to think they were hiding something during times when social control was very high (Also think second world war and jews hiding from nazi. You didn't want to attract attention by looking like you were hiding something.) I don't know it that's actually it, but it's my idea of why this was/is.

@Marco: You won!!
You gave the only right answer. When i came to live in the Netherlands 25 years ago, i asked the same thing about the curtains (or the lack of it) to an elder Dutchman.
He told me exactly the same as you say: It's a habbit, originating in WW2, for the same reasons that you mention.
As a sidenote, i would not feel comfortable, taking photos of peoples private business (visible or not) and post them on the Net just like that.
@ steve: Are you a troll? You sound like one, not only in this thread.
Have fun

Dutch too. Yes, ChrissyT, it's quite nice being Dutch :)
The 'open curtains' thing still applies in my village - I can watch a television series from one window to the next while walking the dog in the evening.
And did you notice the houseplants? I believe the houseplants-on-the-windowsill-mania is quite typical as well, don't remember seeing that as much in other countries.
Disclosure: yes, I have houseplants on the windowsill, no, I don't leave the curtains open in the evening, no I'm not going to tell you what I'm hiding :)

I am a troll poker. I keep a sharp burning pointed stick to poke trolls with and also deep political dicussion on the rights of the person not to have his or her image taken by me.
I have been arrested several times now for taking pictures in public places because the police state that is the USA is afraid of people having too much information.
I attempt (with some humor) to make people see that George Bush is just 3 degrees removed from any other mass killer in the last 100 years and it is only a thinking populous that will prevent the past from coming back again.
This is a world problem and not just a USA one. His actions effect everyone.
Rant over.
A troll, I hope not.
I don't like small minded people. I don't like people who stick to the party line and don't think.
I don't like people who hold other people in bondage.
I like people who leave their windows open and say screw you to the world. I think sunlight destroys mold and fungus.
A troll...I hope not.

Steve: A troll poker? There are no trolls here to poke. Stop being a tit, is my suggestion.
I don't see how the american political situation has anything to do with this thread, and I for one couldn't give a rats arse about your opinion of Bush. This is a photo sharing site, not a soapbox.
So let's try and stay on track and not hijack the conversation, eh?

But it had already been hijacked and I might take offense at being called a tit if I understood what that meant.
Did you perhaps mean twit?
Sorry to make your fingers do all that work.

Another Dutchman here.
That the missing curtains stem from World War II must be another myth. The Czech writer Karel Čapek visited the Netherlands in 1931, and wrote a book about it called "Obrázky z Holandska" (Pictures from the Netherlands). In this book he mentions the Dutch habit of missing curtains.

Steve it hadn't been hijacked, no. The majority of replies were pertinent.

America isnt the world. Just because Americans have surrendered their freedom and minds to fear doesnt mean other countries have and to be honest i for one wish some Americans would stop pushing their morals and politics onto people - this is a country with the biggest porn industry on the planet and a bit of tit on TV becomes a major scandal.. jesus wept.
They are interesting images, the people can see them being taken, they have no curtains, clearly its not bothering them but there is always someone who screams privacy which is why taking photographs has started to be a pain in the arse in so many places - Clearly in Holland this isnt an issue so why do the privacy people have to scream and throw things? Get over it people.
And save me from the Bush bashing - yeah the guys a dangerous moron but hey your country re-elected him so deal with it why dont you.
