Flicker.com was taken. We liked the word "flicker" - nice connotations (in English anyway, though not Dutch). Screens. Images. Candles. Etc.

I like the flickr name.
It has other good marketing attributes besides the nice connotations that Stewart mentioned.
It is short and unique which makes it easy to remember and tell friends about.

I like flickr because now you can switch all words in chat that end in 'er' to just end in 'r' and it's fun!

I think the name flickr works well because it has the techgeek misspeling and once you know it, it is easily remembered and easily said, it rolls off the tongue: flickrrrr. You can almost hear a French accent, non?

I like the visual image of a flickering movie, giving glimpses into each others worlds. Of course, in France le flic are the police so I don't think that's what you were going for.

I'm glad we weren't able to get Flicker.com. We thought it might be a problem at first, being hard to spell, but that didn't turn out to be the case.
Also, I'm glad we didn't use the word "photo" or "foto" in the name. There are at least a hundred companies that have that in their name, and I can't keep track of them anymore.

it is a great name.
the only problem with it is the "f-l-i-c-k-r .. NO "E"!" thing, which makes it rather dorky to tell your friends about in person.
but since flickr is so gosh darn addictive, and you aren't going to be outside talking to your friends anyway, the name is perfectly fine.

I wondr if there have been copycats, trying to capitalize on Flickr's success -- you know, like "rockr" and such...

some of the api tools use the "r" no "e" ending.

"myflicker.biz" wasn't good enough, eh Caterina? ;-)
Seriously, I love the name. It's short and sweet. And like any great brand, it defines itself on its own terms.

Oh Stuart, hope you're not suggesting to all your gay and lesbian customers that as flikker = homosexual in Dutch, having gay euphemisms isn't a nice thing? I think I'm *very* nice!

Stewart says above that they chose Flickr, because Flickr.com was taken.
Of course I got curious and had to see what was there.
Take a look.... www.flicker.com
pretty funny.

Do what SuperDave said. Hah! it is funny.
Honestly, I liked the name flickr from the first time I saw it. It's a pretty cool name. But ofcourse, the site itself is so addictive that have the time, you hardly know, let alone care that it's called 'flickr.' :p
