striatic is a group administrator striatic says:

it was recently brought to my attention that there is a chinese knock off version of flickr.

myrice.fotolog.com.cn/
zmcch.fotolog.com.cn/

both present something eerily similar to something that most of us are very familiar with.

my first reaction, beyond a ridiculous amount of laughter, was to create my very own chinese knock off flickr account:

striatic.fotolog.com.cn/

and so did some other flickr folk:

the cool thing was that the admin area was also a close knock off of flickr .. which meant that even though everything was in chinese we were able to figure it out quite quickly.

the other thing is that it isn't at all a bad knock off .. there are functional tags and sets and upload by mail .. much fun.
imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, i suppose.

I find their Future feature most interesting. The illustrated caption interface looks very familiar, and the link to the currently non-functional Flash-based slideshow also rings a bell. Insofar as its English-language links reveal, it records the methodical cloning of Flickr's tagging, moblogging and set-creation functionality.

Judging by its parent's .gov domain, fotolog.com.cn appears to be an enterprise of the PRC government.

further .. it isn't really cutting into flickr's 'market', my own decision to transfer all of my photos there and delete my flickr account notwithstanding.

While I don't know, I'd say that this would make it politically more palatable, domestically, for China to block it in the future. If potential photo-sharers are diverted into this Flickr ripoff, or could switch there, dissent would be lessened.

in that 'against nudity' thread some people mentioned that saudi arabia had already blocked flickr, so maybe the news wasn't out yet .. i think what got news was not china blocking google, but china asking google to make changes and google agreeing to make those changes.

Flickr is not blocked in China as I can' always access it here.

cool. i suppose when and if flickr puts out international versions of its service this may have to be rehashed all over again.

part of the reason i'm moving all of my stuff over there and deleteing my flickr account is because i want my photos to be accessible by as many people as possible, and if china blocks flickr all of the group pool flooding in the world won't be able to make up for it.

OK, here goes. I'm talking about the list of categories in the box in the upper-left-hand corner of the main screen, fotolog.com.cn.

FIRST ROW (Tags)

These seem to vary from day to day so the best thing to do is run it thru the altavista BabelFish translator.

There is a fuller (but not complete) tags list at URL www.fotolog.com.cn/tags.f which you can also feed through BabelFish (almost all the Chinese characters are translatable into English, e.g. :

"I am the king of big"
"Railroad picture"
"Lust metropolis" (?!)
"National defense knowledge competition sketch")

SECOND ROW (推荐 = "Recommendation")

最新 • Newest

热门 • Popular

人气最旺 • "Human spirit most prosperous", i.e. top-favourites

排行榜 • "order list", top 40 users, top 40 groups

群组 • "group group", top groups, sorted by number of members

邀请朋友 = invite a friend

THIRD ROW (分类 = Classification)
流行 • Popular
人物 • Character
风光 • Scenery
旅行 • Travel
美食 • Food
汽车 • Automobiles
其他 • "Other"

Well, there is some logic to this, if you value accessibility over censorship. And all the cool things are happening here (e.g. geotagging).

But you're assuming China will at some future point block Flickr, and that's still an unknown. At least check with a few people at Yahoo! Inc. (via caterina and/or stewart) before you decide; I'm sure they must have some experience in this area already (I'd be rather shocked if they didn't, after a decade).

At least consider keeping a token account on flickr, so that flickrites who want to keep in touch with you don't have to set up a second account on fotolog.com.cn in order to do so.

You've made a lot of good contacts here, Ambassador Striatic ;-) so don't shut it down completely... keep a small window open so people can throw things through to you. You never know what advantages there could be from having a foot in both camps.

@T_a_k: Very related. This is precisely why the advent of a PRC Flickr clone bugs me. This can be read as a two-level game: divert PRC users to a state-regulated site, then close off access to its foreign equivalent. Your BBC story (published today, June 7, 2005) deserves to be quoted, so that casual readers can see what's going on:

Chinese Blogs Face Restrictions

The Chinese government has announced plans to police web forums, chat rooms and blogs alongside other websites.

Websites in China have long been required to be officially registered.

The authorities are now determined that blogs should also be brought under state control.

[snip]

Private bloggers must register the full identity of the person responsible for the sites, the Chinese Ministry of Information Industry (MII) said.

Commercial publishers and advertisers can face fines of up to one million yuan (£66,000) if they fail to register.

All blogs and websites must be registered by 30 June.

'Don't bother'

"The internet has profited many people but it also has brought many problems, such as sex, violence and feudal superstitions and other harmful information that has seriously poisoned people's spirits," said a statement on the MII website, explaining why the new rules were necessary.

It has developed a system which will monitor sites in real time and search each web address for its registration number. Any that are not registered will be reported back to the Ministry, the statement said.

Blogs are often used in countries where freedom of speech is limited as a way of speaking out against the ruling power.

The new rules could be devastating for bloggers who do not toe the Chinese Communist party line, said Reporters Without Borders.

"Those who continue to publish under their real names on sites hosted in China will either have to avoid political subjects or just relay the Communist Party's propaganda," the organisation said.

"The authorities hope to push the most outspoken online sites to migrate abroad where they will become inaccessible to those inside China because of the Chinese filtering systems," it added.

Known as the Great Firewall, the filtering system used by the Chinese government is not entirely unbreachable; for every new restriction and technical door that it slams shut, the Chinese people find a hack, a workaround or an entirely new way of communicating.

According to official figures, about 75% of sites have already complied with the new procedure.

In May, many bloggers received e-mails telling them to register or face having their blogs declared illegal.

But one anonymouse [sic] China-based blogger told Reporters Without Borders that when he phoned the MII to register he was told not to bother because "there was no chance of an independent blog getting permission to publish".
