I originally expected the cameras announcement in summer 2009. But last summer we got the 7D instead of the expected 60D. The announcement of the 60D will likely come soon because the 50D is getting old now.
I wonder if the 60D will just be a 50D with video and a drastically improved sensor. Or if Canon takes the opportunity to more thoroughly redesign the xxD series. I´d like it if they could get rid of at least 100g of the weight. And especially I want the tilt and swivel LCD screen I urgently need for my macro and flower closeup photography. And I have heard that the video guys too need it urgently.
Last year Canon introduced a new sensor production facility that allows to create much better sensors. Compared to their equivalent predecessors the new sensors have about 1/3 stop of less random noise and a much better suppression of pattern noise. For me the new sensor will be the most attractive feature of the 60D. Currently only the 550D 7D and 1D4 have the improved sensors.
The specifications are still unknown. This will be the first DSLR in the xxD series with a HD video mode. Rumors can be found at Northlight Images or Canonrumors.

Zoomorphism
Why do we see "animals" in some shapes, which probably are no animals? It's because they may be animals. In case of doubt it will eat you! That rule perhaps is what feeds zoomorphism: It is better to be wrong than to be food.
Artists, who know zoomorphism, can tame the beast. They play with it:
The two examples shown here are works are from Henry Holiday (zoomorphic interpretations of shapes in the works of other artists applied in illustrations to Lewis Carroll's The Hunting of the Snark), Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger (source for The Beaver) and Gustave Doré.
The "animal" in Doré's etching (source for the winged rat) quite probably was not meant to be an animal, but Henry Holiday's played with zoomorphism and turned the shape into a winged rat. Also there is no beast cuddled in the arms of the lady painted by Marcus Gheeraerts. Here Holiday's creativity gave life to a handkerchief.
Content: If you spot any ambiguous zoons (zōˈŏns) in your environment, fell free to add the to the pool. However, objects which are intentionally made to unambiguously look like animals better should look for a different zoo.
Snark: I added two Snark-Illustrations (1876) by Henry Holiday. But otherwise no Snark is allowed. "Seeing things" is very much a personal matter, therefore showing own perceptions needs a friendly environment.

The pool of this central administration group shows the most interesting photos of the other groups of the series.
The admin team of this group series selects and invites the best photos found on flickr into well focused groups. In contrast to a normal flickr group the administrator selection of all images in the Amazing Image group series makes sure that almost all the images in the group have a very high quality.
For now I am the only administrator in almost all of the groups. The complete group series has more than 150 groups. So I will need help to get all groups running at a more reasonable speed. Many of the groups will not make much progress until I find an administrator for each of them to help with the necessary inviting of images. If you want to join the admin team and help with the inviting send a flickr mail to Andreas Helke.
I can use the help even if you don´t have much time for it or only want to do the job for a limited time.

This group is part of a series of linked groups that assembles some of the best photos found on flickr . Each group focuses on a narrow topic only.
This group will only accept photos invited by its administrator. One of the places the administrator will check for invitable photos will be the submission queue of the group itself. So if one of your photos is good enough just try to add it to the group and see if it ends up in the group pool. If your photo does not have 5 or 10 favorites already it probably does not have the required quality. But if it is really good and just unnoticed or new it will be admitted to the group even without favorites. If the group has no active moderation queue the group is not set up correctly yet and the pool will be cleaned later.
Most of the groups will only accept either color or B&W photos.
There are no formal requirements for entry into the group pool. But I expect that the photos that have the required quality will have 10 to more than 100 favorites already. And a lot of comments and views too. But the main selection criterion is the simple question "Would I be disappointed if my invitation was declined?" So an amazing photo with just 20 views and nothing else gets invited if it passes the test of this question.
Frames should be minimal or better not there at all. A collection of images with different frames rarely looks good on a computer monitor.
I have created two special groups for the photos that are amazing but have a distracting frame.
The photo needs to show a large version the viewing tool from flickriver.com. Otherwise I wont invite your photo into this group series. I found that the large image view on flickriver to be one of the most important and impressive features of the group. I do not always pay attention to available sizes or invite photos that only flickr itself shows large. So you´ll see some small images too.
If your photo does not show a larger version even in flickrs own slide show viewer your photo might be removed from the group later.
Photos with restrictions on showing larger sizes behave differently in those two players. The flickr slide show does not respect the members size restriction settings and always shows the large size if it is available on the flickr image servers. Flickriver currently is hampered by missing features of the flickr api and often shows the images of non pro members smaller than needed.
The interestingness sorted view of many of the group pools. This is a central feature of this group series. Check it out. This show of the group pools is impressive if you select one of the large photo sizes inside the flickriver show. You can press the space bar to operate in its manual slide show mode. This avoids scrolling all the images. For some photos flickriver only shows the medium size. The flickr slide show is better at showing photos large because it ignores the size restrictions specified by the photos owner. It always shows the large size if it was uploaded at all. I try to avoid inviting photos that don´t show a large version in the flickriver tool. And particularly photos that don´t even show large in the flickr slide show.
The latest feature of the group series is a Exhibition gallery group. Two full group pages of photos from each selected member create an exhibition. If you want your own exhibition send an flickr mail to Andreas Helke.
If you are interested to present your own photos without having to wait for an invitation join the Amazing Image: Photography Discussion and Exhibition group.The general rules still apply. A lack of distracting frames and a large enough size in the flickriver tool or at least in the flickr slide show is required.

About Six Nineteen
Six Nineteen is a group inspired by my visit to the 619 Western Building when I was in Seattle this past winter. It is an artists collective of sorts; for over 40 years, it has served as a studio space for over a hundred alternative, avant-garde, and outsider artists of all genres. Many of these artists also call the building their home.

The Housing Revolution Flickr Group aims to bring together the best, most evocative photos in order to show the world the need to improve housing safety, efficiency and quality of life in the developing world.

Our mission: Around the developing world, people desperately need safer, smarter, more sustainable dwellings. Not just green housing, but better housing… and it has to be affordable.
Anyone who has spent time in developing countries knows that contemporary housing in many of those countries is – in large part – unsuitable. Unsuitable for the climate, for one. In many places, traditional construction long ago gave way to blocky cement structures that heat up unbearably in the many hot months. They leak terribly during the rainy seasons. In earthquake-prone areas, homes are built of brittle materials that won’t withstand a jolt. And housing is often built without a thought to energy and water conservation. This isn’t only about housing for the poor. In some countries, even middle-class and wealthy citizens must contend with housing that could be much safer and much better.
The solutions, the knowledge and the technologies are out there — what’s needed is creative synergy and action. The time has come for a Housing Revolution!

The National Capital Commission (NCC) is running a national youth photo contest!
The nationwide contest is open to Canadian youth who are 14 to 24 years old. The contest runs from August 22 to October 31, 2011.
Forty winning environmental photos will be exhibited in Canada’s Capital Region.
The top three winning photos will each win valuable photography equipment, including a Nikon DSLR camera, courtesy of Henry’s Canada.
