I've been looking at frost in my photostream lately. I took a load of pictures on Saturday, and more on Sunday. We have a pond nearby with lots of interesting features - leaves, benches, ducks walking on the ice.

Ok, I'm an outdoors kind of guy and I've already shot up anything "inside" that is going to get shot, short of Christmas lights in a month or so.

Yeah, I'm photographing trees in urban spaces with the fog as background. I'm totally into it. I like it way better than the sun or clear skies. I wish it would stay, as there's like 50k pictures in the city I want to take.

Basketball. I have twelve games and a holiday tournament on my schedule in December. I'll probably squeeze in a few snow shots and some b&w, too, but I'll mainly shoot sports.

I spend all summer shooting mainly people/public events and also classic car shows.
That basically drys up from November through to April here in Calgary.
At this time of year...
I get the chance to play with scenic photography. I will try to get away to a local municipal park (especially if there's snow on the ground) and fire away. I also enjoy photographing urban scenes - old buildings, old neighbourhoods, etc... The new areas of most cities don't photograph as well, but go find those older neighbourhoods and you'll find lots of great stuff to photograph.
And also, if it interests you, try some indoors photography. There is lots of macro type photography you can do around your place.

My camera's too dodgy in low light to take many pictures at shows unfortunately, I usually do take more indoor shots during the day though, probably more portrait type stuff and still lifes etc. Some outdoor stuff, which is awfully pretty, but it's awfully cold and damp outside, and my camera doesn't like it much (neither do I for that matter).
Also there are so few hours of daylight right now I frequently miss my chance on days when I would like to take pictures.

Re: Indoor Macros
Lighting aside... How do you do it? I think it takes a certain type of person to even imagine these images in the first place. I'm sure there's plenty of macro in my place, but I'm an outdoors photography type (whether scenic, urban, people or automotive), I somehow can't even imagine the indoors macro pictures... the way my brain works? [grin]
Different strokes for different folks is the way I see it, we're all good and/or enjoy different kinds of photography. And that is the joy of it all.

for indoor macros, you have to think "inside the box" so to speak.
plants are always a favorite: take a close look at parts of leaves, or masses of stems.
Spices can be interesting (whole, not ground!).
Utensils with interesting lighting and odd angles (or not).
audio or video medium (tapes, cds, albums, etcs).
cooked food can be somewhat unpleasant, but fresh fruit macros can be fun.
Then again, there are always still-lifes to try, for non-macro shots... but they can be more work.

That's the fun part - learning something new, rewiring your brain a little. Turn something bad (lack of usual subject matter) into something good (growing your abilities and vision).

Or, just take hundreds of pictures of your damned cat.

There was one day last winter (very cloudy, somewhat cold) when I just had to go on a photoshoot.
I went to a local park that has very few trees and took two rolls of pictures, was actually a great day, got some nice pictures, even got blogged once from that day... After about two hours the hands started getting a wee bit cold and I finally packed it in.
I even titled the pictures "Dreary Winter Day"

Now is a good time to learn lighting techniques. i've done a Portrait Photography course this term which started with available light, then I learnt studio techniques.
My latest project is with flash - this weekend i have an assignment to use the hot shoe flash outside, and to bounce it, diffuse it etc. and set it for different exposures to what the camera might read, and see the effects.
This can produce quite dramatic portrait effects outside, darkening skies whilst lightening the subject etc. Looking forward to playing around!

Winter landscapes can be great in the city and countryside. Night time shots are easier to do because the sun sets earlier so get out your tripod and do some long exposure work in the city. Frost on leaves, steam on a cold day.

I made yesterday, photos of my diaries, the very old ones, the curent ones, the futures ones. Then, the afternoon sun fall on my rose leaves and colored them in red and I took that from my open window.
Today, I took from the car, the bared trees at the entrance of my small town

from my perspective -- plenty! I have always lived where there's sunshine almost every day of the year!
So... how about snow falling, snow on trees, footprints in snow. frost -- on anything! holiday lights, at home or in the city. wood burning in the fireplace. candles! or perhaps a good time to work on some still life images, or your photoshop skills. :)
enjoy your winter. it will be gone again soon enough.

LOL @ calicojane...
I find this sort of weather very nice for outdoorsy shooting. It's kind of nice to be out in the middle of the day and not have the harsh shadows from the noon-time sun. Everything is sort of blurry, sort of mysterious.
Plus, I love frosty mornings. Nothing like a nice sheen of ice over the world to get some interesting shots. Revel in the beauty of changing seasons.

Blue-ish white balance.
Harsh light. (hard to shoot into, or with, the sun)
Not many people hangin about...
Cool.

it's also a great moment to reflect on your own works. Get into those shoeboxxes and reorganize those piles of photos while it's dark. Too dark to shoot.

Yeah, take inspiration from the masters. AurelioZen is someone I know only from flickr but his photos constantly challenge me to think again... have a look at two I woke up to this morning. Perfectly captured from a morning commute in grim winter weather...

OR begin to get serious (even if its seriously funny) about self-portraits. I am not a self-portraitist myself but love the humour and creativity in the (daily) self-portraits of another of my favourite contacts, Cybergabi...
