I really love the photos that rikj posts, and it would be cool to see people doing similar things in their local areas - he posts pictures of his home city (Leeds, United Kingdom), but concentrates on places that are "hidden" (i.e. hard to get to, or people dont notice), and also old places that have been abandoned and about to be demolished.
It's a great slice of history of my local area, and great fun to try to guess where the places are (he purposefully doesnt say where they are so people can guess), and regularly provides interesting background reading on locations.
here's a few example photos:
an abandoned cinema that closed in the 1970s, still full of '70s decor and style, as if frozen in time:

interiors of old abandoned buildings:

"becks" - man-made waterways from victorian times (1800's) to support early industry when everything was water-mill powered (pre-electricity!), no longer used and hidden away (i've never seen one in all the years i've lived here!):

even underground abandoned railway tunnels deep below the city:
it's captivating stuff for someone who lives and works a stone's throw from the photos but never even knew they existed, even more so that through continual redevelopment of a major city like Leeds at some point they'll be lost forever.

i just fell over this thread by accident and just wanted to mention, that I created a pdf magazine called pict*re!
It's full of images from flickr, even an interview with jeff clow, a technique how-to and some download tips. I just made one issue, but another one is following the next weeks!
The magazine is free for download! You can also participate - take a look at the group, but maybe I will find a picture of you anyway that I want to feature.
Visit our group here: flickr.com/groups/pictre/

Lest we forget...
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch, be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields
~Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae
God and the soldier
All men adore
In time of trouble,
And no more;
For when war is over
And all things righted,
God is neglected--
The old soldier slighted.

I just wanted to share with you how Flickr has been helping out a second grader and her school project. My daughter's class is participating in a Flat Stanley project in which she has created Flat Bobby. Normally students in Mrs. Stone's class would send their Flat Friend off to a friend or relative and that person would take a few photos and write a small piece on what the Flat Friend did while visiting. It is a great geography lesson.
Enter Flickr...through the use of the many friends I have made here on Flickr, literally all over the world, Amber's friend, Flat Bobby, has already traveled to various places thoughout the USA and Canada. He has also visited Holland and China and will be visiting China, Denmark and other places. We started a blog to help track all his travels and while Bobby has gotten official clearance to travel via the internet, he is also physically trying to circumnavigate the globe.
I just wanted to thank Flickr for this opportunity to help open a window into the world to a group of seven and eight year olds in New Hampshire! It has been a great trip so far and we still have another month to go!

Press about Flickr in Brazil!
Published in our "New York Times" - Estadão.
www.link.estadao.com.br/index.cfm?id_conteudo=6117
Fotologs can be mere diversion (fun) or work
10/01/2006
www.flickr.com/photos/joaobambu). "Echaporã me fascina porque tem muitas pessoas interessantes.
