How about mainegal's photoset "Meeting my grandfather", which is based on photographs found in her grandfather's things (he died in 1995)?
A couple neat things:
- she found the location of two photos of him in Nice, France in 1945 and took photos of herself in the same spot (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mkilbride/366326010/in/set-72157594151461568)
- The daughter and granddaughter of her grandfather's good friend found the photos on flickr (independent of each other) and now the two families are reconnecting
- the world war ii photos are amazing. She even has the names of some of the soldiers and is trying to identify more.

At last I wrote a simple software (a Firefox extension) for Iranians who are banned from accessing this amazing website.
The extension location is:
addons.mozilla.org/firefox/4286/
And discussion board is here:
www.flickr.com/groups/iranian/discuss/72157594467732437/
I've sent this to all Iranian contacts I know on flickr, and the result was great!: Size of Iranian group increased by about 100 (about 15%) in less than 3 days, while it had 600 members for more than 3 years!

DCist has just finished taking submissions for a photography show to be held in March through the DCist Exposed Photography Show group. People shooting in the area were asked to submit their 3 best and the pool closed with 504 photos from in and around Washington DC. Some really great photos in there. Well worth a look through.
Full disclosure, I've submitted three photos too!

I was lead to do some searching and found the following groups, both of which chronicle "things that look like the default Flickr icon":

Some of them are just really neat!

Trivia Question: I know that at some point, at some Flickrite gathering, I overheard this little character's name...unfortunately, I forgot which part of my memory houses this information. Can anyone remind me? (A FlickrMail would be great!)

What city has the most active Flickr group? New York? Chicago? Nope. None of the above.
Of the top 100 cities in America, the San Francisco, Seattle and Madison, Wisconsin Flickr groups have more members per capita than any other city in America. Madison, Wisconsin? What the hell! With a population of just 221,551 (only the 83rd largest city in America), the Madison, Wisconsin Flickr group has 473 members (or one member for every 468 citizens).
I can see San Fancisco and Seattle...both are favorite tourist destinations and beautiful cities. But Madison, Wisconsin? Is it the water? Is it the cheese? Hmmm...maybe Madison is just a very inspirational city.
Come see the most active Flickr community-based group and the beauty of Madison, Wisconsin:

I don't mean to take anything away from Madison, Wisconsin - they're running a fine group. But the Pittsburgh group would also like to make the claim to "most active"...
Some basic math that may mean nothing....
San Francisco:
2,286 members
96 discussions
.04 discussions per member
Madison, WI
482 members
74 discussions
.15 discussions per member
New York
5,310 members
414 discussions
.08 discussions per member
Pittsburgh
729 members
502 discussions
.7 discussions per member
I'd say we'd win the "most active" thing hands down. Or at least we're most talkative.
Also, if we use the same math that Madison used, we beat them that way too.
Madison pop. 221,551
Flickr members: 473
1 Flickr member per 468.29
Pittsburgh pop. 334,563
Flickr members: 729
1 Flickr member per 458.93

Or Flickr blog could post about the second Irish Blog awards (http://www.awards.ie/blogawards ), which was seen last year on Flickr even hitting the top tags,

Most of the photoblog nominees are big Flickr users, awards.ie/blogawards/2007/02/18/2007-irish-blog-awards-sh... including myself, though the honour of the award went deservedly to to www.headphoneland.com/ who also has a flickr account www.flickr.com/photos/headphoneland/
The awards were held last night, Sat March 3rd, and were a great mix of bloggers with lots of cameras so I would be expecting loads more pics to surface over the next couple of days! I imagine there were more than one or two sore heads today.
It would be great to see such an amazing event being covered in Flickr Blog :)

First Digital Photo
Walden - Russell Kirsch and Joan son

May, #25, 1957
It was 50 years ago this spring that National Bureau of Standards (NBS, now known as the National Institute of Standards and Technology, or NIST) computer pioneer Russell Kirsch asked “What would happen if computers could look at pictures?” and helped start a revolution in information technology. Kirsch and his colleagues at NBS, who had developed the nation’s first programmable computer, the Standards Eastern Automatic Computer (SEAC), created a rotating drum scanner and programming that allowed images to be fed into it. The first image scanned was a head-and-shoulders shot of Kirsch’s 3-month-old son, Walden.
The ghostlike black-and-white photo only measured 176 pixels on a side — a far cry from today’s megapixel digital snapshots — but it would become the Adam and Eve for all computer imaging to follow. In 2003, the editors of Life magazine honored Kirsch’s image by naming it one of “the 100 photographs that changed the world.”
Kirsch and his wife Joan, an art historian, now reside in Oregon. Together, they use computers to analyze paintings and define the artistic processes by which they were created. Son Walden — whose face helped launch the era of computerized photography — works in communications for Intel following a successful career as a television news reporter.
It was a grainy image of a baby — just 5 centimeters by 5 centimeters— but it turned out to be the well from which satellite imaging, CAT scans, bar codes on packaging, desktop publishing, digital photography and a host of other imaging technologies sprang.

I'd hardly describe myself as a treehugger, but when local developers tried to pull a fast one, I took some snaps and used Flickr as the rallying point for local press, environmental agencies and so on.
Although mad as hell I didn't 'name and shame' the company responsible, I just used Flickr as a central repository for the evidence, where folks I contacted could get more detail.
Gibraltar's a tiny community, but word seemed to get round within a day of the original posting and the developers soon seemed to be trying to clean things up. Still a bit of a way to go, but the power Flickr seemed to have helped things along immensely. Developers (and other industries) here seem to have a lot of power (property prices far higher than 200 metres away in Spain) and one's always hearing of the latest outrage. If you know how Carl Hiassen writes about Miami you'll know what I mean.
What else would I have been able to do? Write a letter to the relevant agencies? Email and hope attachments got through the civil service firewalls? I certainly wouldn't have been able to achieve much on my own, with a day job to go to.
With Flickr, the original post received 50-60 hits in a few hours. Hardly earth shattering numbers, but in such a small community as ours, it's clear that someone took notice and decided to tidy up. I'm not talking about starting a revolution, but rather providing interested parties (individuals, government agencies...) with a simple mechanism for seeing what's going on. And Flickr does that.
Tonight I've posted a new photo of the current state of the site, showing latest developments and notes on the story so far...
Thanks again, Flickr. I think we've found another use for responsible photo sharing!

Feztastic - The Album

Flickr legend Big Al Davies, whose Flickr inspired ditty "Pretty Little Stream" was featured on your blog back in June 2005, wanted to put a CD together, and where better to do it than right here on Flickr.
He started a group where he could preview tracks, get feedback and invite members to contribute their photos and artwork for the packaging. No fewer than twelve Flickrites are featured in the final product: Art Napro, Auntie P, birdw0rks, bunchofpants, emdot, Kitsch Kat, Monocasette (who also produced a video for one of the tracks), Mr Jaded, phil h, the Rocketeer, Steffe and Big Al himself.

The CD is finally finished and is available through CD Baby and iTunes.

June 12 is "valentine's day" in Brazil :o)
More info about valentine's day around the world at Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valentine's_Day
In Brazil, the Dia dos Namorados (lit. "Day of the enamored", or "Boyfriend's/Girlfriend's Day") is celebrated on June 12, when couples exchange gifts such as chocolates, cards and usually a flower bouquet. This day is chosen probably because it is the day before the Saint Anthony's day, known there as the marriage saint, when many single women perform popular rituals in order to find a good husband or a boyfriend.

The previous sighting was from 1986 - taken off the British Virgin Islands by the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies. No sightings since 1986, until the Flickr photo. Very cool!
This message was from Judy Allen at Allied Whale
In other words this whale hadn't been seen for 19 years, The first sighting was in the Virgin Islands this sighting was in Newfoundland!

I wish there was a way to favorite sets, not just individual photos. When I find a cool set, I'd love to be able to find an easy way to return. Kind of like a repeat visit to a great gallery...

I was going to propose the same as Brock. I think it's quite interesting the meeting of Flickr and science.

This is the most amazing set of found photos ever. I go back to it all the time. "chet's photos" Drl. will agree with me if he sees this.

Thanks to Streunerin for finding the stream originally.
And of course the photostream owner - shee_rah77 - for sharing chet's photos

oh yes theresa is right. i was stunned when i discovered this set of found slides from the 60ies (i think) a couple of months ago. his family-photos are wonderful. very raw and full of soul.
i wonder if he knew how talented he was. i think blogging this in the fflickr blog would be a nice reward for shee_rah77 who had a lot of work with scanning all those slides.

www.flickr.com/groups/lewisandharris/discuss/721576008384... - Keep an eye on that thread, in 2-3 days, there ought to be enough photos for a blog post. It's about making the dull exciting, taking interesting photos of a rather run-down supermarket in Stornoway, a remote Scottish town (my hometown, but not where I am now, so I can't participate personally). There are already a couple of good ones.

just wanted to give a heads up to the flickr blogmeisters (caterina still?) regarding the recent post about singapore's national day.
regardless of what you think about the day itself (patriotism being the last refuge of a scoundrel and all that), you guys could at least have used some "decent" pics... (i don't want to denigrate the present pics too much, but seriously, singkers has some pretty good photogs, and an easy tag search for "singapore NDP" brings up some great pics)
eg

and no, none of them are mine ;)

I think these are somehow more than the sum of their parts. All shots from underneath electricity pylons... you expect them to be the same but they're not:

GabrielR [deleted] says:
With my girlfiend (By the way, we met thanks to FLICKR :D) we where walking Santiago streets, when we stumped into a Street Jazz Band playing some nice tunes...one of the members was this really nice old man who started improvising a cool tap in front of us when he saw we were talking pictures....she took a few, i took a couple...and each one uploaded one. A few minutes ago, she gave me a link...and this is what Eldan90 by accident spotted on a tag search
I guess we can call it coincidence, syncrony...or just GREAT TEAM WORK!

I created last week a group about the italian coffee maker called "la moka". It's new for the moment and we can see both artistic good pictures and more classical pictures of things but I think it's getting on.
If you want to visit.
