HDR Cave photos

I was wondering if anyone had done any HDR photography in caves. It seems like the technique would lend itself to caves and bring out details that might otherwise be missed. However, I don't know if the flash would be a problem.

I've overlaid multiple shots before with lighting from different locations which is similar to HDR in that you're using multiple photos from the same vantage, but different in regards to the light.
Now that I have an SLR, this may be something I can experiment with.

I made an animated gif of a caving photo to show the differerence between the original snapshot and an HDR photo. It's quite a difference: Click Here to see it

David,

First, thanks for sharing some great caving photos!

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range and I talk about it more on my OnlineCavers.com blog. BTW, I invite you and other cavers join the OnlineCavers community. It's like MySpace but just for cavers. It went up three weeks ago and already there are more than 4,000 caving photographs and more than 70 caving videos.

If you want to see what really great pictures the technique produces, just look at these Flickr photos with the HDR tag.

I've done a few HDR photos of cave entrances. Here is a picture of Hoya de Las GuaGuas and Cueva Linda in Mexico:

I've never tried doing this away from the entrance light though.

Caverguy,

In your comparison I noticed it looked like you didn't tone the first non-HDR image. If this is the case then the comparison is more dramatic than it would be otherwise. I've not used the HDR method but a little basic toning will go along way to restore contrast. Especially in that photo that doesn't seem to have as wide of range of tones to compensate for as much as it is just flattened by direct flash. I have seen some pretty cool HDR photos though so I'm not discounting the technique. Just a thought and question.

This group has some pretty nice photos. I'm just getting into cave photograpy and hope to turn out some quality photos like those posted here.

Yeah, the non-HDR photo was untouched, I believe.
