I enjoyed looking through all of these gray photos, and noticed that -- to me, at least -- there is a big difference between the color of the grays in the black and white photos vs. the grays in the full-color photos.
I think gray is beautiful. It's quiet; gray can be a beautiful matrix for other colors; gray holds colors like red, blue, orange, rust ... without being obvious about it.
In Montana, where I live, winter visitors often comment that everything is so "gray." They may think the winter landscape here is "boring." To me, it's fascinating. I learned a long time ago to look under the gray -- if you think of trying to replicate the grays of any winter landscape with just gray pastels, for instance -- you'd be hard pressed to paint something that had much depth and interest. On the other hand, if you "make" the gray shades on your painting with all the other color pastels, the grays will be deeper, richer, more complex.
There are other colors in this winter photo, but the dominant colors are different shades of gray:
