About Castleton, Rochdale
Pictures of Castleton, Rochdale, Lancashire, UK.
CASTLETON, is a small village in the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, Lancashire, (who mentioned Greater Manchester?). It stands on the Rochdale canal and the Manchester and Leeds railway.
It didn't get its name until about 1876 - until that point it was known as 'Blue Pits Village' (this name apparently originated from the blue sand, which was mined from the many pits once found here.)
Until the industrial revolution, Castleton was quite a rural place, but all the hills, fields and trees soon gave way to mills and factories. The Arrow Mill still stands proudly besides the Rochdale Canal.
