About Castelli del Ducato di Parma e Piacenza
The current provinces of Parma and Piacenza, in Region Emilia Romagna in Italy, cover, today, that ancient political reality, primary crossroads of history between the XVI and the XIX century, known as Dukedom of Parma and Piacenza.
Following the death of the last Duke of independent Milan, Francis II Sforza, in 1535, the Milanese's domains would have been moved into the Habsburg territories of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor at the time. In view of a better conduction of Italian sectors and trying to find a softer solution to the fiery issues raised after the Lutheran Reform, thus opposing to a Council (by times required), the emperor come to terms with the Pope Paul III Farnese, promising him, if he had not called for the Council itself, the appointment of his son, Pier Luigi, as duke and giving him the Piacenza's and Parma's areas - previously under the Sforza domains.
The do ut des solved with the birth of the Dukedom of Parma and Piacenza in 1545, ruled by the newly-appointed Duke Pier Luigi Farnese.
This was only the beginning, as the House of Farnese, would have had, here, short life...
The new political reality was just the final shape of merged events which have found their theaters among these rich and important valleys in the Apennines of Western Emilia between the Po Valley, elongated to Northern Europe and the Peninsula, projected to Rome and the Mediterranean, of course dating back to the High Middle Ages,
Right these places, since Lombards Ages, around the VII century, show the contests of local potentates who share territories framing them in a perimeter of castles, fortress, rocks and palaces known today as Castelli del Ducato di Parma e Piacenza.

This Group collects portrays of defensive-military building and artefacts - castles, rocks, fortress and fortifications, walls, citadels, palaces - lying in the current Provinces of Parma and Piacenza only.
