About Carfree city scenes and Patterns
This group is inspired by J.H. Crawford's books Carfree Cities and Carfree Design Manual and the accompanying website at www.carfree.com. There is a Yahoo! group for discussions related to the books at groups.yahoo.com/group/carfree_cities/ and a group devoted to carfree lifestyles and more general discussions at groups.yahoo.com/group/CarFree/.
The main aim of the group is to build up a pool of publicly available scenes that illustrate the carfree city proposals in the two books. These can be either still pictures or video and are ideally from urban neighbourhoods where no automobile traffic is permitted or normally present, apart from occasional light delivery vehicles (or the occasional unavoidable car if the picture is otherwise very compelling). Locations may be narrow side streets, main roads, small city squares and urban parks with visible buildings.
Scenes may contain pedestrians, bicycles and other human powered wheeled transit, electric wheelchairs or scooters, public transit (trams, light rail, metro), cargo trams and the like, or small motorized delivery vans. Scenes dominated by automobiles don't illustrate the kind of peaceful, human-centered environment we're looking for, though if they serve as a contrast in a particular picture or pair of pictures, they are welcomed (with a pained smile!).
We also welcome contributions illustrating architectural patterns from Christopher Alexander et al's work A Pattern Language :
