Capture NX: Edit Challenge - Save the Turtle

The original NEF can be downloaded here:

drop.io/turtlesoup

This photograph was taken at Sifton Bog in London, Ontario. It was a bright overcast day. There I was innocently waiting for some deer to show up so that I could shoot them, when I noticed this guy swimming by.

I did my best to position myself to reduce the glare from the sky, without much success.

Using only Capture NX, any version, with or without plugins (not photoshop or anything like that), see if you can salvage this image.

This was my first attempt to save the image:

Sea Monster

All I did was play with the levels in the Quick Fix section.

The watermark was added before I started this challenge thread, which was a suggestion from the NX2 Edit thread.

I kind of like some glare; it tells part of the story.
I got identical results to you until I loaded up wildlife batch adjustment, upped the mid tones on the curves adjustment and used the tonal contrast filter.

Here is my second attempt. Like FuzzTheKingOfTrees, I really went at it. A lot of selection control points, color control points, brightness and contrast adjustments. As well as starting off with the levels.

But FuzzTheKingOfTrees did a much better job than I did.

Interesting! My goal was to keep a natural approach, so the reflections had to remain visible...
I played with the curves, and saturation. did a little sharpening too:

Love Rich Gersh's colours. Looking again, the turtle seems yellow in the original, yet turns orange in mine. In Rich's, the water looks the colour of sky too.
Can you say how you brought out the yellow?

Not bad at all Joe!

Hello Firmware, looks like we are neighbors. :~)

I couldn't open the nef ( NX2 version 2.0) so used the jpg from your smugmug page, it is a bit small but ....oh well.

Glare1

Including a contrast adjustment in Quick Fix 11 edit steps: 2 LCH, B/W/N, 3 Contrast&Brightness, 2 HPS, Gaussian Blur, 7 control points.

Not really happy with the water colour, I should update NX so I can open D90 NEFs.

Thanks for the play, I have to get down to the bog haven't been there since the fall.

Mr./Ms. Turtle (peeping at you turtle) by saronann

I left the "peeping at you" turtle under the surface. Thanks for the fun!

Dan Bo ...

Next time you are in Sifton Bog, look for the turtle. I named him George.

I don't know why you couldn't open the NEF file. I use Capture NX 2.2 and the picture was taken with a D90. Maybe you just got a fluky download.

I spent 10 minutes on this -- it's a tough one.
Full description on image's page.
A lot of different ways to interpret this picture, but I think it's important that the turtle was under water, so kept it looking that way.

My versions not much different from the OP.

After others convinced me to keep the water - took another go - this one was actually considerably easier than the previous attempt to remove the water.

Steps: +2 Contrast in Quick Fix, Set B/W/N Control points, LCH to bring out green neck, Tonal Contrast Filter to lessen reflective water, Level & Curves adjustment, Pro Contrast filter, A localized LCH to control orange/red tones on face, USM on Turtle, Gaussian Blur on water to make it smooth.

I will definitely look for George and try and get a photo of him. :)

I'm running NX2.0 as the latest version didn't seem to work as fast on my laptop, so I don't have the support for the D90 loaded. I was able to open the NEF in ViewNx but wasn't able to convert it to a tiff (which is strange as I have done this before?..oh well)

I was able to extract the basic jpg from the NEF with Photo mechanic so I did have a larger file to play with this time.

I think this is about the best as I can do with only using NX. I may for fun try it in PS just to see.

Cheers
