Bisphenol A in canning lids
I've known for a while about BPA in canning lids. In fact, last year Organic Gardening Magazine contacted canning jar companies asking them if they intended on discontinuing the use of BPA. At the time, everyone replied that there was no such plan. OG suggested people preserve in Kilner jars and other glass lidded cans, but those are really expensive, and hard to come by.
I think I read that Tattler lids are BPA-free, though I'm not sure, and I haven't wanted to make the investment in them. I try to keep stuff from touching the lid too much--usually it's not an issue after processing, because of the headspace.
