I have a Quantaray (Wolf cameras store brand of a Sunpak model). It was about $60. What I like about it is the legs extend quickly, they unlock with a twist, instead of a bunch of flip-locks. It is very compact to tote around (comes with a carry bag), and with the legs together, it is slim enough to double as a monopod. One adjustment screw for the single ball head. I can get the model number and some images for you this evening if it sounds like what you may be looking for.

Your question is almost impossible to answer, Susan. How much may it cost?
I use a Manfrotto 190XPROB tripod with a 460MG head, but it´s not cheap. Well over 300 US dollar I guess.
By the way, I prefer to use the LCD when I use the tripod. And don´t forget to turn off the IS when you have the camera on a tripod.
I understand that this was of no help for you, but as a rule of thumb you could say that the more you pay for a tripod the better it is.
The cheap tripods hold a wile and then you have to by another.

The link above is the very exact tripod I have (if the link doesn't work it's the very standard/common Sunpak that's like 35 to 40-dollars).
It's more than enough for the S5. It doesn't have a ball-head, but it offers the same movement as one: 360-degrees, up and down. I couldn't justify spending the money for a top notch tripod when the Sunpak is way more tripod than a S5 needs. :o) Everyone is different though, just my point-of-view.
Oh... I have the wide angle adapter, which almost DOUBLES the weight of the S5. My tripod will support MORE than twice the weight of the S5 with the heavy wide angle adapter.
Just curious:
Since the LCD comes out and swivels around to just about any angle... you shouldn't need to kneel to see anything. Using the swivel LCD with the tripod is one of the coolest features about the camera. I'm 6'1"... but with the swivel LCD it shouldn't matter how tall you are.
Conclusion:
So in my point-of-view.... an inexpensive Sunpak that costs 40-bucks from best Buy is more than enough tripod when referencing it against the S5.
Side note:
Oh.... I'm getting another tripod for Christmas also. :o) A very portable Gorillapod. It's awesome because it conforms to just about any environment... AND it's strong enough to wrap around things (like a chair or a small tree) and still support the camera.

Yes Michael, the gerillapod is amazing!
About the tripod: it´s not the weight of the camera that is the problem with a (too) cheap tripod. I had one for about 25 US dollars, and as soon as I released all the extensions the tripod was not stable anymore. On top of that one of the lock levers went "kaputt" after a couple of weeks.
Here along the English channel it´s often blowing, and therefor I need a tripod that is like a rock.

I am trying to get a substancial tripod and a good ball head...I can't afford a lot...but I also don't want to end up buying another one in a year. Scott Kelby recommended a ball head and tripod in his book The Digital Photography Book.
I do believe the tripod has been discontinued or replaced, but the ball head he recommended is still availalble and BH recommends this tripod with it...

I think I will order it...I will let you know how it works!

Don't laugh, I just purchased a cheap tripod .. only $29 from Amazon.com it is aluminum and plastic construction and is pretty sturdy. This is my first tripod so I have nothing to compare it to, time will tell how long it will hold up.

List price on that one is $69 though so you got a great deal. Mine is a Sunpak and was about $60 I think. As long as you aren't getting one that regular price is $20 it will probably be ok. The cheap ones I had to begin with were in the $20 range and were just short of useless.

I bought one for $10 at Radio shack and it was truly garbage. legs would not extend easily and the head was hard to aim where I wanted it.

Oh.... I also got the Gorilla Pod. Actually... my wife bought it for me for Christmas and I opened it my mistake (in my defense it came in an Amazon.com box and I was also waiting for a shipment from them). But I'm using it now... we always give our presents early.
I'm so impressed with it. I'm going to take some pictures of my S5 with the Gorilla Pod and post it to this group. It's a highly recommended accessory that is very versatile.

Looks like the same Sunpak tripod that is sold for about $40 under a number of different brand names. I believe Wolf camera also sells it under their Quantaray house brand. Similar or the same as the Dynex tripod that Michael mentioned earlier in this thread. Should be just fine.
I almost bought one of those, but found one For $60 that is very compact and the legs extend with a twist and pull, rather than flip-latches. Mine also uses a simple ball head, which makes for quick adjustments, but accurate panning in one plane may be a little more difficult.

I got a used Manfrotto from our local camera store for less than $100 ... great deal! I've just ordered a cam-pod from Adorama ... it's a bean bag type of pod that you can place almost anywhere (top of car, a rock, a fence post). I'll let you know how it works after I've had a chance to try it out.
I thought the Gorilla pod wasn't strong enough for the S5. Am I wrong?

There are different sizes.. I have the SLR-zoom Gorilla Pod and it's strong enough.... even when I have the wide angle adapter attached, which almost doubles the weight of the S5.

There are a lot of cheap tripod in market. Even from Manfrotto, slik and some more. But the main things to check are:
The material- the best, light and strongest one is carbon fibre.
The weight- the weight is important. Tripod is another important equipment for photography. So you have to carry it everwhere.
The head- You have s5 which has a screw type mounting. But if you ever want to buy an SLR they have a cip type. So you should get a tripod which has changable heads.
The weight it can hold. S5 is light. But in future if you want to buy an SLR and get some zoom lenses then the weight can go beyond 7kg. SO you have to keep that in mind too.
So, buy carefully. It seems a regular equipment but is very important.
All the best

Has anyone tried a Manfrotto Modo tripod with the S5? I saw the Maxi version (785B) in a local camera shop yesterday, and liked the look of it.

I bought a Sunpak 6600, and I figure, it will be good for at least a start. When I need another, I want a Manfrotto.......
Yesterday, I ordered myself a few little Christmas presents.....one was the Raynox DCR-250. I can't wait, after seeing the possibilities in this group!

I have a Sunpak 5800D from Best Buy. I can only say this....it does not hold up well after six and four year old children decide to take it apart. Sigh....guess a new tripod needs to go on my Christmas list as well.

My tripod is a Velbon 7000. I got it in the year 2000 back when I got a Canon Rebel G. I still use it for my other two digital cameras and it has all kinds of adjustments to lower it or to extend it higher. It's pretty cool. And it is pretty sturdy. I haven't really used it much but I am getting into taking the types of pictures where I really need it now.
