Hot/Stuck Pixels?

view profile

Malte Wannerskog says:

Hi,

I received my S90 today and I have some hot pixels showing on my images. One strong blue pixel is even showing when im opening RAW in DPP shooting in ISO 100 1/4 which i feel is pretty bad....

I think i will exchange it for a new hoping to get rid of the hot pixels.

Whats your experience on the subject?

Every camera I have bought in the last few years has had at least 1... d300, d700, g10. I guess if it really bothers you then exchange it and hope your next copy doesn't have more. Very common, hard to avoid at least one or two.

I understand that it is common at higher ISO and longer exposure time... but ISO 100 1/4?

I exported the RAW image to TIF and ran it through this application www.starzen.com/imaging/deadpixeltest.htm
And it found 1 dead pixel and 6 hot at ISO 100 1 sec. I really dont want a dead pixel on the sensor so I am going to return it and next time buy it in store instead of from the internet so i can personally check the camera before purchase.

Mine has a hot pixel too. I am still trying to decide between sending it back and learning to live with it....

Bought a new one. From my testing in the store no dead/stuck pixels.

I've got at least one on the right side. Very noticeable. Still deciding if I want to live with it or try another one.

Sadly I have to report that I have found a stuck pixel on my new S90 aswell. Very noticable when opening RAW in DPP. However, opening RAW in ACR removes it efficiently. Comparison here:
wanner.csbnet.se/share/dpp_vs_acr.jpg .This time i think I will try to take the camera to my local Canon service center and have them map the bad pixel out instead of exchanging the camera for a new one.

Got a reply from my local canon service center, they said its no problem to bring it in for a pixel adjustment, its a quick fix.

@Malte - That's about how mine looks as well. Maybe I'll see if I have a Canon service center nearby and see what they say. It's an easy fix in Lightroom, but still it annoys me every time I see it!

If you open it in latest version of lightroom (with s90 support) i think it should be removed by itself. At least It is taken care of automatically when you open in ACR (latest RC) labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Camera_Raw_5.6. What concerns me are the times im not shooting RAW.

I'm mostly a JPEG shooter but that's good to know. I'll probably send it to the service center after the holidays. If I return it I'm afraid I'll just get another with a stuck pixel and it might be in a worse place. I shot video with it last night and it shows up real good on there as well.

It'll go on the warranty, so shouldnt cost you anything so shouldnt cost you anything.

What bothers me is that I can understand if a pixeladjustment is needed after some time. Since from what i understand pixels go hot with time. But Canon should have calibrated this during manufacturing. On a brand new camera hot/stuck pixels should already be mapped out. Sloppy quality control?

Edit: Went to my local Canon service shop this morning. Camera was ready to pick up this afternoon. They even gave me a free wrist strap :). They said that they found at least two very visible pixels that was removed. But their pixel adjustment software covers the entire CCD so it should be fine now :). No cost at all, covered by warranty. Thumbs up for the good service Canon!

These seems older posts. Well, I just got my S90 today. I have a stuck pixel in the middle of the frame. The worst part about it is that it shows in in live view, right on the LCD!

Yes, dead, hot , stuck pixels are the reality. I used to have Nikon D100. It had a dozen of hot pixels, but I never knew about them. That's until I found out about the phenomenon and went hunting for them.

In my D700 now, I think there might be one, can't remember. It's so out of the way, that it's simply invisible; there if you go hunting.

But this one, oh please, that's too much. In your face every time you pick up a camera? I've had dozen of compacts before, and without looking, never knew of any pixel problems.

I think I will replace mine and hope for the best. As long as it stays out of my way, I'm fine with it...

I had a dead pixel in the LCD, just returned the camera and the new one was perfect. I would advise returning it, and if it is beyond the return date calling canon and complaining until the replace it or repair it for free. Good luck and sorry to hear about your woes.

I had a hot green pixel on the sensor of my first S90, I returned it and the replacement camera is perfect.

The sensor had one bright pixel that you would barely notice in reasonable light when taking still pictures. However, when using video it was noticeable all the time because of the image downscaling involved.

As others have advised above, it is worth trying to get a replacement or repair. This might be a small camera, but in the UK at least the S90 is very expensive for what it is (around 330GBP, but cheaper on eBay).

Why should we pay that sort of money for something that's in less than perfect condition?

I had mine delivered day before thru amazon and notices one straight away. Amazon were kind enough to approve a replacement. I am hoping the next one doesnt have one.

Bottom line in digital photography is that every camera has them, and if you go looking for them, you are bound to find some. If you have one, one pixel on a 10 megapixel image is something you should be happy about :-)

The best solution to this problem seems to be to avoid looking for them, or switch to film photography and obsess about dust, marks and streaks on the film instead of dead or hot pixels.

And that's just the sensor. Then there may also be some on the LCD, which of course, don't affect the image itself.

You could run CHDK; that'll get rid of pixel issues. But a propos is right; they're going to show up eventually anyway. :)

I got a green hot pixel which shows at ISO 80 occasionally and at ISO 800 upwards for sure. It's annoying. I already contacted Canon support about it. I will turn the device in so they can map it out. I will let you know about the results.
