Bob Bryan serves to the French Davis Cup Doubles Team today. Bob and Mike Bryan were defeated 7-6, 5-7, 3-6, 4-6 to make the score between France and the USA 2-1, USA in the lead.
The USA ended up winning the tie 4-1 when Andy Roddick clinched it in the 4th match.

Sam - were you shooting wide open, or stopped down?
Wide-open, for the most part. Here's an example at 150mm...
Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 on 1D Mark III (1.3 crop camera)

Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 on 1D Mark III - cropped.
NOTE: This isn't a crop from the center - on a 1.6 crop camera, this would actually be the top edge!

Is it super-duper sharp? No. But for a $600 f/2.8 zoom, it's pretty impressive nonetheless.

That brings up another fantastic thing about the lens- AF speed. You don't hear about a lot of people using the 85L for sports.
As for having too many primes (or lenses in general)... I guess it's possible. Just depends on how many different situations you shoot in. I have five lenses that I actually use but I rarely carry more than 2 at a time.
Also... man, I coulda sworn there was something I came here to do... what was it now...
Ah, nevermind.

Here is my new baby, only had it a week:-

I haven't had much chance to play with it yet, but I grabbed this yesterday evening:

And this when I first got it:-

wrote When you change the crop factor, you change how far you'd be from your subject with each camera to get the same framing, hence you change the amount of compression you see.
Ok- I get that. But, I must be getting dense with old age. On a FF, you'd be at distance "x" to get a given composition, like this one:

(yes, the world NEEDS more crappy photos of my dog playing with his balls... )
Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/1600)
Aperture: f/2.5
Focal Length: 135 mm
ISO Speed: 320
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: Flash did not fire
So you get a certain level of compression. Call that "C". This compression is directly related to the depth of field of the image. Since I don't know how to calculate compression, but I do know how to calculate DoF (thanks to the many websites out there), I would be physically closer to my lucky dog to get the exact same framing. This means that I'd have a much smaller DoF.
Let's say I was 10 feet away to get this framing. The calculator says that the depth was:
Depth of field
Near limit 9.91 ft
Far limit 10.1 ft
Total 0.17 ft
To get the same framing on the FF, I would need to be 6.25 ft away. The Dof would be:
Depth of field
Near limit 6.2 ft
Far limit 6.3 ft
Total 0.1 ft
Almost half of the DoF!
If the Compression effect is related to DoF, would it not make sense that the image would be more compressed with a more narrow DoF? Am I thinking too much into this, and really need coffee?

Here's an example of compression and how it effects a photo (and our perception of DoF, btw):
35mm @ f/2 about 3 feet to subject

135mm @ f/2 about 13 feet to subject (equalized for subject size)

(unfortunately a third photo should be here, and that's the 35mm at 13 feet, cropped to be the same framing as the 135mm - they would look the same in terms of compression, although the 35mm shot would have much more DoF)
The 135mm is much more "compressed" - you see less of the background, and so while the DoF is roughly identical, the 135mm gives you a much "cleaner" looking shot. So, getting back to the original point - your 135L on a FF is not going to look the same. It's going to look like an 85mm looks on a crop camera. To get the same effect on a FF camera, you'd have to have 215mm lens.
Again, I believe this is largely why the 135L has gotten so popular in the dSLR age - the combination of having f/2 on what is effectively a 200mm lens giving you this wonderfully "compressed" effect is very novel and has that "wow" factor you guys keep rattling on about.

I did read that article... but I'm not so sure I buy the math in there - that's what got me thinking earlier today.
I think the angst that Sam has with me is that I just need to get over it, and admit he's right!! (grin) And he probably is...
I definitely agree with you. When I had the 28-135 lens, I found that I was at 135 more often than not. While going wide has some appeal, I prefer the tighter in look.
The real gist lies in the 'useable' distance that you have, and my desire to contemplate FF lies in that the lens really is too long for indoor work, but it's just so... yummy. Going to FF will allow me to be able to better position myself for indoor shots with the lens, compression, depth, and other issues be damned!
Ok - must pimp a little more...

LOL. It drives Sam nuts, but eventually, I'll prove him right. We've been packing for a trip (yes, I'll have internet access), but I'll be otherwise unable to respond much.
Oh, and I did rent a lens for the trip (from www.lensprotogo.com - thanks, Paul!) - I landed on the 10-22mm as a supplement to the 50 and the 135. I took a few test shots with the lens, and yes, it's mindblowing how wide it is. From shooting normal and tele lenses so much, I forget how much perspective distortion there really IS in a superwide. My wife did NOT appreciate me taking a photo with it - she made me delete the closeup...
I did get an equation from the research paper on perspective compression, and will plug 'n' chug some numbers in there, and I'm willing to bet that they will prove Sam right. I'll also show that for working indoors, the 135 really should be on a full frame...
(and yes, this is now on 3 pages...)

You guys can stick your noses in charts and equations all you want, but when trying to understand photographic principles I'm of the opinion that you're better off using photographs than calculators.
Here's three shots, with three different lenses, all taken from the same distance. They've been "cropped" to all achieve a focal length equivalent of about 215mm:

As I've been saying... the amount of "compression" is identical, while the DoF is drastically different. End of story.
FWIW, here's the same 135mm lens used in the first shot on a 1.6 crop camera, moved forward to compensate for framing since it is now on a 1.3 crop. While the difference here isn't exactly dramatic, you can see that moving the camera forward has changed the perspective, and so you can now see more of the background (you can see the left hand edge of the stove now, for instance):

So, again... perspective is controlled by distance to subject. Focal length equivalent controls the FoV (AoV? is there a difference?) and thus the distance you will be to your subject to get the same framing. So using a 135mm lens on a FF camera will give you less compression and most likely a less desirable photo than a 135mm lens would on a 1.6. Capiche?

night performance is excellent, but day it tended to be over exposured, is something to do with exposure compensation?
night: Canon 30D+ 135 F2 original, untouched:

and day light: original and untouched, open its original size, you can see edge is not sharp at all.

compare to 200mm 1.8L side by side, you will find difference:

Just to add to all of the rest of the 135mm F/2L love (if there wasn't already enough reasons to go out and buy one...)
It's smooth and crisp:

It's bright and colourful:

Although thin, the DOF (even on a 5D) isn't unmanageable:

I've used it at parties (in large-ish hall size rooms) to get pseudo-candid portraits; the results are fantastic, but it tends to scare people as the front element seems to have a weird ethereal green glow, as if it's going to steal their soul :)

Yes -- though it's a LOT of work to travel with an infant, she seems to be tolerating the trip relatively well. When you introduce her to lots and lots of new people, she can freak out a little, as you can imagine (she is here being introduced to her relatives, and there are LOTS of relatives here in Venezuela). But, on the whole, the trip is quite fun! The hardest part is that some of these relatives want to grab my camera...sigh.
On the way back from the beach, we visited Valencia (more relatives...). One home is set up to attract lots of birds...

And yes... the 135 is still my favorite lens, by far.....
