canon batteries

I am looking at adding a couple of batteries for my 40D and when I priced them the guy at the camera store showed me two types. The canon battery which costs 129 dollars and a generic battery for 50 dollars. Has anyone ever used the generic battery and are they any good? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yes and No, there are some good generics as well as some real bad ones. get it from a store that will warranty them for at least a year. We sell the CTA and DELKIN brand generics and have had a very low failure rate with them.

I use Hahnel replacements and have never had any problems. They are half the price of Canon in the UK.

If you want very good inexpensive batteries, go to SterlingTek.com. You can get a 2 pack of 2000mAh BP-511A equivalents for around $23. Here's the link:

sterlingtek.com/twocabp18bap.html

They also have chargers for around $15 as well.

You will find many people in this forum will most likely echo this response. I've had very good luck with them for both my DSLR (currently a 20D) batteries and with replacement batteries for my HV20 HD camcorder.

Good price, good service, good product.

I would not touch the generic batteries, keep with the canon once, Amazon do them for a reasonable price, I have just bought two more for my self. I had a bad experience with a generic brand in the past and will never go back.

I'll second sterlingtek. Great batteries. Never had a single problem with any of them.

I have an XTi, so I'm talking different battery type (but maybe it'll still help)... my Canon battery that came with the camera is probably the least powerful, the Opteka batteries that came with my battery grip are the longest lasting, for sure. I have heard great things about SterlingTek, too.

I wouldn't ever buy or recommend super generic batteries. I have two Opteka batteries, one Canon and one Flashpoint/Adorama battery... I'd definitely recommend these brands from my personal experiences (Canon being the lowest on my list actually).

I've been using batteries from sterlingtek for years (for my 20D and D30 as well as my little point and shoot HPs and my Canon TX1). The two 2000mAh BP-511A batteries I bought have outlasted BOTH my Canon batteries.

Hi! I have 3 batteries for my 30D. One is Canon original, and the other two are generic: Hama (Campower CP 826 Li-ion. 1400 mAh) and those works perfect, no problems and long lasting use.

you can't really predict if the generic batteries you bought might last long...just make sure they could provide you a warranty for that k?

Let's evaluate Canon's original and generic.
I'll give 100 point to original and also I'll give 90 points to generic.
But the pice is double or more expensive.
Now it is your choice.

Original brand batteries will in most circumstances be better for the usual common sense reasons. Obviously, they have brand reputation to maintain for a start. If Canon batteries started failing hand over fist there would be a mass recall etc...

That has never happened. I have three unbranded batteries for my 5D. One simply stopped working. The other two which are different unbranded batteries seem fine.

However, when I bought the 5D2 I stuck with canon. I bought some unused genuine batteries on EBay for about double what I would have paid for unbranded and half the Canon price. Worth it just for the peace of mind I assure you.

Canon doesn't make its own batteries but outsources to a battery manufacturer in China to its exact specifications.

The exact company that makes them for Canon may be a well kept industry secret, but if that same factory makes compatible batteries and markets them under various generic brands and you happen to buy one of them, you've hit the proverbial goldmine.

That's why some people swear that the generic battery they've bought lasts as long as Canon's while others report poor results. I wish I knew the right generic brand to buy.
