Don't always be tempted by the latest and greatest. While the 400D is an improvement upon the 350D in terms of megapixel and cleaning mechanism, what will you do when the 450D comes out in 18 months, or the 500D 3 years from now? Will you keep upgrading camera bodies every 18 months?
Look at the feature list and look at your cost to upgrade to a new camera. If the new features are worth it for you, then do it. Otherwise, be happy with what you've got and save that cash for other purchases.

I checked out a preview on dpreview.com and i really don't know what all the fuss is about. 8 to 10 megapixels really isn't that big a jump and for most consumer users 8 is more than enough (A3 prints if you really want to stretch it).
The cleaning mechanism is bit of a gimmick i reckon, there is nothing that a good blower brush and a bit of care can't do in keeping the dust out.
i only upgraded from the 300D to the 350D due to the lack of control on the 300D (choice of metering modes, flash compensation, auto focus etc) now i've got a full range of options i'm going to stay put and save up for some decent lenses instead! :)

Personally unless you have focus issues with fast primes or buffer depth the updgrade is not worth it. I would rather spend $800 on a couple nice lens unless you already have a good selection of high quality lenses.

A couple of features I like on the new XTi are as follows:
* Bigger screen with wide angle.
* Full camera information on the screen.
* The screen automatically turns off when you put the camera to your eye.
* Picture Style! (that's a big one for me)
* 3 stage sensor cleaning that avoids dust, removes dust and should something actually stick, there's a software solution that easily removes spots in processing (using DPP). Krasnyi Fotoapparat, this is a solution, not a gimmic. I'm trying to figure out how to get dust on the sensor so I can try out the software.
The feel is much the same and it used the same vertical grip as the XT (Very cool).
I'll be doing some testing between the two cameras this week. I suspect the XTi will have a bit more detail because of the resolution and more punch because of the Picture Style.
Keep an eye on my forum: www.flickr.com/groups/rebel_xti/
I've posted a few full resolution pictures there if you want to check them out.
I agree with mrfixitx on the lens. If you have a Reble XT now putting money into glass is always a good idea. Just don't pick up the XTi and try it out. You'll want to have one if you do. :-)

I'm not interested in it, as it's just another consumer level DSLR. Canon is catering to the entry level market with this one in response to Nikon's new D80. Another plastic camera with a bigger chimp screen, picture styles that I won't use, and all those freaking buttons instead of a command dial isn't something I would want. I'm much more interested in upgrades to the 1 series bodies.

well, my main reason really is the bigger viewing screen at the back. we, XT owners know that the screen sucks. thats really my only complaint. the rest i am perfectly happy with- i do shoot a lot outdoors during daylight so yes, the screen matters to me.
i figure i can sell the XT with the kit lens for $550

I got my 350D just back in June, and upgrading doesn't seem like much of an improvement. .7" on the screen, but it will still be very hard to see. The LCD is just made for basic review, not for large-scale. And two more megapixels? Slightly tempting, but there's cameras with many more megapixels, if that's what you're going for.
If you would really like the 400D, just keep your 350D until the prices of the 400D start dropping.. ;-) Then it will be much lower, but still quite good, no? They will always be improving the market, you just have to be content with what you have.

I like the upgrades on the 400D, but alas it won't work with RawShooter. Maybe I'll wait and get a 30D instead.

I bought the XTi today, to replace my XT. I love it. The big LCD is a welcome change for me. Now Im going to sell my XT, probably on Ebay.

@ Pizzo: I would be interested to know what you think of the XTi's sensor cleaning system. Is it as effecient as Canon claims it to be? I know it is perhaps too soon to comment on the sensor cleaning system but hopefully you can do so once you gain some experience with it. Best and congrats.
