Canon EOS 5D Lenses

Todd Klassy says:

Here is one of the benefits of using standardized tags for all lenses. Below is a list of links that give examples of certain lenses on the Canon EOS 5D body. This list will grow over time.

If you wish to adopt this method (and we hope you do), please include tags for each lens exactly as the manufacturer of the lens specifies the lens. For example, the tag for the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens would be canonef24105mmf4lisusm or "Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM" (please note the quotation marks--the spaces, /, . and - will be removed by Flickr's search engine).

This is actually what I do with all of my photos; I tag them using the full, syntactically correct name Canon gives to its lenses.

BTW, I own all but two of the lenses you've listed, and I've used the other two. They're all great lenses.

Just a note, it is possible to make tags with spaces within to aid in reading... just enclose the words as you want them within double quotes I believe it is.

Xenedis says:

You can include spaces and other characters in a tag by enclosing the entire string in quotation marks, but when presenting the tag in your list, or as part of a URL, etc., the spaces and other characters (like the slash) will be removed.

If you create a tag like "Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM", it will translate to "canonef300mmf28lisusm".

Look at any of my photos, and then click the lens tag and you'll see what I mean.

Here's what I keep handy for posts:

"Canon EOS 5D"
"Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM"
"Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM"
"Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM"
"Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM"
"Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM"
"Canon EF Extender 1.4x II"

I drag/drop whichever is meaningful into flickr's tag field. The spaces make reading easier and the quotes keep the spaces.

fixed, thanks.

How about lenses not available anymore?

I owned the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM, but just sold it this week. Some of my photo's still have a tag, but not according the above.
I did change all the others though.

Thanks for this. Saved me the problem of deciding on a sensible and consistent tagging system for lenses, which I wanted to do for my own use. I've added the appropriate tags to my photos thus far and will continue to do so.

It's an excellent idea to try and encourage consistent tagging of lens usage, it should provide a very interesting and useful resource. The more people that use it the better.

How about adding a notice about lens tagging to the new 'news flash' banner for the group? OK, I'll change it.
Adding the camera make and model etc. to the EXIF data doesn't appear to be a trivial task. I can only find difficult-to-use command line utilities that can do it. The easy-to-use GUIs, like Exifer, can't so it seems : (

Both the Tamron AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 LD Macro 1:2 and Tamron SP AF90mm F/2.8 Di 1:1 Macro were added to the database, but no photographs appear for the 90mm Macro. Remember, the official lens tag for this lens should be exactly as it appears on the company web site, which would be "Tamron SP AF90mm F/2.8 Di 1:1 Macro" or "tamronspaf90mmf28di11macro", depending on which tag you want to use (both will work).

Are there any other lenses out there being used that aren't in our 5D lens database? If so, please speak up!

You can see how the list is shaping up by looking at the top of this thread.

The problem with the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 Mark I is that everyone is using canonef50mmf18 for their Mark II lens. There are only a few that use that tag correctly and even fewer that use canonef50mmf18i.

No Canon lens is officially known as a Mark I. It's a term people colloquially use to distinguish it from the Mark II.

There are a few current Mark II lenses, such as the 16-35/2.8L II, 50/1.8 II, 85/1.2L II and 200/2.8L II.

Arent the DG range for cropped sensors, therefore, no good for the 5D.

The "Sigma 20mm F1.8 EX DG Aspherical RF" tag has 43 results, I believe. However, when I search for "Sigma 20mm F1.8 EX DG", there are LOTS more results. Sigma's lens page lists the lens without the "Aspherical RF" part, but within the actual page of that lens, it is referred to with "Aspherical RF" at the end.

Which one should it be?

incase anyone is still wondering, DG lenses are designed to work with both cropped and full frame sensors. DC means only for cropped sensors so should not technically be used with full frame/film 35mm cameras.

Lens database has been updated.

Are any of you using lenses not included the list above (either manufactured by Canon or not)?

This has been the single most useful thread to me on the entire Flickr.

Thank you Johnny.

I've been to this page like 200 times but never realized how much I appreciate it.

I agree, this is a great resource and my most visited page before choosing a new lens.

Can we add the 24L Mark 2 to the list?

Cheers

The Canon EF-S 10-22 would be useful too. After a minor modification it works quite well as a 15-22 zoom for the 5D.

Todd has either departed, or is about to depart, on a massive camper-van-based tour of the US that will take him months (the lucky git). Consequently I can't see him having time to update this list. Any of the other admins care to take the reins and devise some way of centralising all the lens tags?

It looks like Flickr has broken the camera tagging/searching for all the EOS cameras - go into the Camera Finder and and select any of the EOS cameras and you'll see it can't find any pictures taken with that camera.

I wonder if we could get the good folks who develop the uploaders to include a setting that automtically tags photos with the body and lens from the EXIF data? It seems if you are handy @ coding it would be easy enough. Wouldn't it be nice to configure your settings once and let the application do the work. :)
