All of us have a screen protector on our 5D -- it's the built-in plastic panel. In the unlikely event that you should somehow scratch it, you can order a replacement from Canon for a small fee. Here are some photos of someone replacing the plastic cover on their 20D screen.

you could get some of the screen protectors on ebay that are a couple of quid (just a plastic layer). they will stop most light scratches, but can add glare and collect dirt if not installed correctly.
there are also a few of these about:
cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3300774...
not sure if the eye piece comes off so you can use angle finders or add extenders etc???

I cut down the screen protector for my palm pilot initially then I got the Delkin popup shade/protector. Aside from the crappy eyecup I luv it.

i've got my from a lokal ebay seller for about 5€ and there are 16 pieces of 3M adhesive plastic layer (currently i am using the first one...
it is totaly clear and a good protection against scratches from dust or sand.
easy, cheap and effective
my first attempt to protect the screen was a hama product... very tricky to mount and it was not blank... nothing to see anymore on my screen in the sun... no no never hama *g*

I bought one from a german ebay shop, from scotch brite. It works and cost really nothing. If you don't like it you can take it easily off without any damage

I wish I could find one similar to what I have on my Nikons. I ordered this from BH:
www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=d...
It's not one of those things that peels off and clings right back on, it's on there really snug, almost like you can't even tell it's there but it works great.

I second @scuddy's recommendation for the Delkin Pro pop up shade.
However be aware that the spindle hinges on the shade are fragile and can break. I've had one replacement already.
The one added advantage with this solution - and I'm sure it wasn't one of Delkin's design considerations - it reduces the urge to chimp so often!

It sounds a sort of strange to me that when finally there is a clear screen in bigger size, well manufactured for pro-usage, people are going to blur it with some add-on plastic, resulting in unscharp pictures to judge results. This plastic will scratch of course even quicker then the screen on the body itself. I really don't understand.

Pixel the one I use causes no distortion or blur, it is very transparent and you can't even tell that it's there. I tried the flip up one but found it awkward and annoying, I guess I chimp too much! ;-)

I have the clip on cover that goes over the screen. I used to use the plastic film, but its hard to see through. The snap on cover cost me about $40 bucks and works great! The only issue I have is that the cover has windows that pop out and I have clocked myself in the eye and the nose a few times when trying to look through the eye piece and forgetting the windows were open.

Ive got a Marumi one that cost around £5.00 and does the job as its made of plastick and id feel safer with that than a glass screen that may shatter if dropped.
