should I buy a canon 25mm II extension tube
|
I am looking into buying an extension tube, mainly for added benefits to my canon macro lens that we all know and love.
I have seen a few pics with it on that look amazing but I don't know just how much light they steal.
Best price I can find at the moment from UK is £95 at amazon. Is it necessary to get a flash too as cash is not overflowing at the moment?
Would like to hear your opinions. (I have pretty much discounted the three tube sets but if anyone really rates them then do tell)
Thanks.

IMHO, the extension tube is not needed if you already have the 100mm Macro. Well, unless you want to get so much more than just 1:1. I am using the Raynox DCR250 close-up filter on my 100mm Macro and it works great.

I have a canon EF25 and it'll definitely give you a sliver of focus with the 50mm f/1.8 lens. However, I wish I opted for the Kenko three tube extension set. It would have been much more flexible at the same price.

Why not the kenkos extention tubes instead of cannon extention tubes? It's just an empty tube without glass, you're not going to see any image distortion. I use kenkos set with canon 1.4x extender.
100mm f/2.8 Macro alone

100mm f/2.8 Macro + 1.4x extender + 68mm extension tubes.

Thanks for the advise all.
I heard the kenkos were either a little tight or else falling off, and although no lens involved what about the electrical supply?
Is there any difference in terms of readout? I am just not sure I will use all three kenkos unless stacked together. Sorry to keep adding more questions but do the three kenko tubes combined have more magnification than the 25mm canon tube? (I'm guessing so) Thanks again for the info.

Rainbow man, I just bought the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro USM recently. Then I bought the Kenko Extension Tubes. I haven't tried them yet but will very soon.
As per the instructions, there are three extension tubes with the following: 12mm, 20mm and 36mm. You can make any kind of combinations. If you use all three, you will get 68mm (12+20+36).
I am just a beginner with not much technical experience. I was told to buy the Kenko by this Flickr friend of mine. You can go see his portfolio. Once you've seen it, you will see that he is a Pro and knows what he is talking about.

Hope this information can help you.

I also have the Canon 100mm 2.8 and LOVE LOVE LOVE it, but today thought I would start investigating buying the extension tubes. Thanks everyone for the information.
Also, thank you LOUIS for the link to the extraordinary photos!

Thanks once again for your useful advise everyone.
I have chatted to another really great macro photographer here on flickr (mplonsky) and he recommends the 2x teleconverter and also the kenko tube set. I think I will go for an 'ebayed' Kenko pro300 2x teleconverter so that I can Beef Up my other 70-200 lens as well. The macro shots should be that much more zoomed but that much harder to shoot. God I wish I had a proper macro flash unit!! It's all money though.
