About Canine Companions for Independence
Canine Companions for Independence is a national nonprofit that trains assistance dogs for people with disabilities.
Imagine not being able to do basic tasks like picking up a set of keys, opening a door, or carrying a bag of groceries without constant help. Put a Canine Companions assistance dog in the picture and everything changes. Thanks to the tasks the dog performs, lives are filled with independence, opportunity and new potential.
Canine Companions provides highly trained assistance dogs to children and adults with disabilities, as well as wounded veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, free of charge. Dogs serve a wide range of disabilities, including those affected by multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, stroke, hearing loss, and developmental delay. Founded in 1975 as the first assistance dog organization, we’ve been providing highly-trained dogs for 35 years.
With over 3400 teams placed across the country, Canine Companions is the largest non-profit provider of assistance dogs for people with physical disabilities, and is recognized worldwide for the excellence of its dogs, and quality and longevity of the matches it makes between dogs and people. Canine Companions assistance dogs are raised by volunteers across the country, trained by professionals in one of five advanced regional training centers, and learn over 40 commands.
