This "gallery" is intended to give the viewer a quick view of the variety of wild canid species. It is limited to one photo per species except when a species displays significantly varied morphs (e.g. red fox, arctic fox). Each photo is accompanied by a link (more photos) to all the photos of this species in the group pool. Many photos are also accompanied by a link to the "CSG webpage" which refers to the species account of this canid in the 2004 IUCN Canid Specialist Group (CSG) Report:Canids: Foxes, Wolves, Jackals and Dogs - 2004 Status Survey and Conservation Action Plan.

I adore my dogs, and wild animals uplift my soul, so this group is a godsend! Thank you for all your hard work, Jim.

But isn't that a Blanford's fox on the CSG page, attributed (2004) to Steve Kaufman?

Has there been any further news on the discovery of the African Wolf? Does it have a scientific name yet?

How about New Guinea Singing Dogs and Eastern Coyotes? They're very distinct subspecies from the main species.

Pampas fox = Pseudalopex gymnocercus
Black-backed jackal = Canis mesomelas
Ethiopian wolf (Abyssinian wolf, Simien fox) = Canis simensis
African wild dog (Cape hunting dog) = Lycaon pictus
Indian fox (Bengal fox) = Vulpes bengalensis)

(Sorry for being a stick-in-the-mud)

@gatin: Actually, the ethiopian wolf is more commonly referred to as the Simien Jackal,not the Simien fox. Most people think it's either a wolf and thus its called the Ethiopian Wolf which seems to be the most accepted name for it or they think it's a jackal and use the name Simien Jackal. I've rarely seen Simien fox used.

Actually, you're right. National Geographic called it a fox in a 1985 magazine, but most use jackal or wolf to describe it.

@estenard
Last I heard, the african wolf isn't a new species, just an old species that was something they thought was something else. It used to be what was known as the Egpytain Jackal and thought of as a subspecies of golden jackal(Canis aureus),but now genetic evidence has proven it's actually a wolf subspecies(or maybe species)and it's now called either the African Wolf or the Egyptian Wolf(Canis lupus lupaster).
