About CAMERA FILTERS

Filter Group

Welcome to the group about Filters!
IF ANY OF THIS INFORMATION IS WRONG - PLEASE LET ME KNOW

There are many different filters around, al doing something different.

There are basically two types of filters: screw-in and the square holder type.
The screw in type, screws in the front of the lens
The other type consist of a filter holder which screws into the front of the lens and holds more than one square filter at any given time.

POLARISERS

Polarisers are one of the most popular types of filter on the market; it comes in two different ones: Linear & Circular.
Both are used for the same thing but Circular is used on an auto focus lens.
This filter will enhance and saturate the colours and reduce reflection and glare from different surfaces.

NEUTRAL DENSITY ( ND )

A Neutral Density filter will cut the light passing through the lens without changing the colour of the image.
If you are down the beach and it’s a bright day, you can use a ND filter to get longer shutter speeds.
You can get a number of different strengths or stack them on one another to get a stronger effect.

INFRARED FILTERS

If you shoot IR images, this is the filter you need.
This filter only transmits the light of IR frequencies onto the sensor.

GRADUATED FILTERS

This is like a ND filter, cutting the amount of light coming in.
The difference with this filter is that only part of the image is affected, not the whole filter is covered; this fades out towards the other end of the filter
