Calico and Torti facts!

Are calico cats all female?

Actually, they’re not. But the odds of the birth of a male calico is about 200 to one, so they’re considered pretty unusual. Calico is not a breed, it’s a description of the fur color of a cat. Calico cats are primarily white with patches of black and orange, while tortoiseshell cats are similar to calicos but with far less visible white fur.

Much like humans, cats have one pair of sex chromosomes, females XX and males XY. The gene for fur color is on the X chromosome, so to be a calico or a tortie, the cat would need two X chromosomes (XX), automatically making her a female. Occasionally, however, Nature gets a bit convoluted, and a male kitten will be born with three chromosomes (XXY). These XXY kittens can be male calicos, though because they are genetic mutations, they are invariably sterile. Some breeders have observed that male calicos and torties also exhibit female behavior, like attempting to nurse kittens.

Speaking of cat colors, have you ever noticed that most orange colored cats are male? The orange (or ginger) gene overrides all other colors. Since male cats have only one X chromosome (the one that determines color), they'll either be ginger or not. Female cats with their dual Xs must have both of them programmed for orange for them to be that color; otherwise, the genes fight each other, and the kitty ends up any variety of colors.

That I would have to do some research on that one....If anyone has an explanation.......please list it here! Thanks! Sorry Outer_hebrides that I couldn't help ya there........I think in my opinion that it depends what color the parents are! And yes they are gorgeous!! I have a diluted torti....she mated with an white with orange spots male and I got one cream tabby cat out of the litter...3 orange tabbys, 1 grey tabby.....go figure??????

There's a gene controlling the "density" of pigment in the cat's coat. If the cat has two recessive d genes as well as the O/o combo that gives them the calico/torti look, the pigment is diluted and appears as blue and cream.

It's all very interesting. :)

Aren't genetics COOL?!? It was my favourite part of biology class in high school.

I actually didn't realize that male calicos were that common - I thought they were even more rare.

I also didn't know the difference between calicos and tortoiseshells until I read this thread. Thanks Birdie! :)

I think this is utterly fascinating. I have been training my mind to remember that calicos and torties are not breeds. That's the tough part.

My Sissy is a calico Domestic Shorthair. :)

Hello my name is Stephanie and I had a question about calicos. First of all they are my favorite type of cat. I have a gray and peach calico. My husband says she looks like marine camo. I work at a vet clinic in Florida and never see many gray and peach calicos. Are gray and peach calicos rare?
Thanks,
Stephie

It's my understanding that cats only come in two colors, black and red, and all of the variations are due to mixtures and densities.

I could be wrong, of course. It wouldn't be the first time.
