About Calgary Strobist

A meeting place for Calgary based photographers to post photos, discuss all things related to off-camera lighting through the use of flash units, referred to as strobing, particularly with relation to the Calgary area.

This is intended as a regional off-shoot of the Strobist group:

www.flickr.com/groups/strobist/

and the Strobist website:

strobist.blogspot.com/2006/02/welcome-to-strobist.html

and is in no way intended as competition, but rather as a way for Calgary Strobists to connect, without clogging the message boards at the bigger site or at the other Calgary related sites.

www.flicker.com/groups/calgary

www.flickr.com/groups/calgaryflickrmeets

It is highly recommended that you be a member of the flickr strobist group and/or read Strobist on a regular basis.

Please don't post pictures here if you are not a Calgary based photographer.

Group Pool Rules

1. Please post only if you are a Calgary area photographer, OR if you have recently attended a Calgary Strobist meetup.

2. Ensure that off-camera flash is used in the photo you upload. (On camera flash is fine if it is used to trigger other off-camera flashes.)

3. Include lighting details starting with the number of flashes and how they were triggered - preferably in the Caption, but using a comment line is OK too. The idea of this Pool is to share pictures taken with off-camera flash, and the details of how (the more detail the better.) Hey, we wanna learn from you...

4. Ensure your photos are work safe as many of our members browse from work. If you have something you'd like to share that would not be appropriate for work viewing, just post the (word) link in a discussion thread with a little warning.

This is not your private art house. People read this site at work. A lot. If you would not leave the photo up on your monitor in an office environment while you head off to lunch, it is probably not appropriate for here. And if your photo is deleted, do not re-insert it.

5. The current daily limit for posting photos is 3. This is mainly intended to prevent people from spamming their entire archive of photos all at once. But really, we only want to see your best work or work that you want real critiques from, and 3 a day should be more than enough!

Optional, but highly encouraged (and great karma:)

6. If you post a picture please leave at lease one comment or critique for another photo in the pool. Just doing this one, simple, quick thing will improve the quality of cross education immensely. Note a technique, offer an idea - anything, really. Just be nice. We're all about civility here.

Group Discussion Rules

a) Before you post, please SEARCH the discussion threads first. Chances are your question or brainwave is not unique. You may find your answer without having to post anything, or you may be able to add to an existing discussion and therefore keep the dialogue grouped together.

b) Keep it on topic (if it’s not Strobist specific but nevertheless you feel it would be interesting to the group, prefix your subject line OT for “Off Topic”).

c) No personal attacks, we’re all friends here.

d) If creating a discussion thread, please write a descriptive subject line (e.g. don’t say, “Check this out” but rather something meaningful like. “New Slave trigger system launched by Sigma”).

e) If creating a discussion thread, please be sure to check back – some people go to a lot of trouble to help others, so thank them. And do it for someone else. It’s good Karma.

f) With so many members, your discussion thread will quickly slide down the pile, so you may need to search for it

g) No commercial or spam-like posts. The moderators will bounce these and may lock you out of the Pool.

And one final, non-photo thing. Above all, this group seeks to be an inclusive, mutually supportive place for people to learn about off-camera flash. You are encouraged to ask questions as well as answer them.

(You are encouraged to search the archive - and especially to read LIghting 101 on the Strobist.com main site before firing off a bunch of newbie questions.)

That said, no one here knows everything. I learn stuff here every single day. Read, and ask.

Also, members of the Flickr Strobist group have created a FAQ, for the benefit of new members.

Happy shooting!
