About Skulls - The Death Head
Skulls, as a species we have a fascination with them. Every culture has it's own symbolism associated with the skull. Surprisingly it doesn't always symbolize the obvious.
Traditionally skulls served as a warning. A skull on a stick translated as danger and now that meaning on bottles means the same. Of course as the Jolly Roger the skull and crossbones are also a sign of danger. But sometimes it can mean quite the opposite.
Skulls can be a symbol of immortality or life after death. A skull with a serpent running through it symbolizes knowledge, especially the knowledge gained through death. This symbolism is commonly seen among the goth crowd.
Skulls abound in fashion. Skull t-shirts and skull belt buckles are extremely common among a variety of fashion cultures. It's not just punks wearing them any more. Glittery skulls, biker skulls, lucky 13 skulls. There's just no end to them. the skull is here to stay.
Never thought you'd see a top fashion model wearing a skull. Skulls and Fashion are united forever. Guess again it's out there and lots of it.
I happen to live in Calaveras County. Calaveras meaning skull. For some reason the early Spaniards named it that. Don't really know why. However we do have skulls in our local history. The Calaveras skull is a famous archaeological bungle. It seems somebody planted it as a hoax in a mine 130 feet below ground. Because of where it was it supposedly proved Humans existed in the Pliocene era. As a matter of fact Bret Harte wrote a funny poem about it "To the Pliocene Skull".
We're a county of skulls. I walk my dogs every day at the river of Skulls (Calaveras River). right up the road is Calaveritas (litlle skulls) yet somehow all we celebrate here is frogs. Hhhhhmmmmm I don't get it.
Oh well we may not celebrate skulls here in skull county but they do everywhere else. Ever hear of Dios De Las Muertes? A day where everyone eats candy skulls.
Anyway post your skull pictures here it could be interesting.
