About Butterflies of Sussex
Welcome to the Butterflies of Sussex! This group is devoted to photographs of butterflies taken in the counties of West Sussex and East Sussex, England. We hope that your visit here will be rewarded with a greater appreciation for the variety and beauty of these insects.
This group is administered by members of Butterfly Conservation Sussex Branch. Butterfly Conservation is a registered charity dedicated to the conservation of butterflies, moths and their habitats in the United Kingdom.
Butterfly Conservation Sussex Branch holds regular outdoor events across the county, plus an indoor AGM and a Spring Social. It manages the Butterfly Conservation reserve at Park Corner Heath and organises volunteer work parties, it advises landowners across the county on how to conserve and protect butterflies and moths, and it collects and compiles records of butterflies in Sussex. By becoming a member of Butterfly Conservation nationally you automatically become a member of the Sussex branch (if you live in Sussex) and receive our newsletter three times a year.
Butterflies are extremely valuable indicators of the state of the environment. Ongoing monitoring programmes help to direct conservation effort where it is needed and also helps to assess the effectiveness of current conservation work. You can make a valuable contribution by submitting photographs of butterflies that you have seen in Sussex.
Sussex is a fantastic county for butterflies and moths - we hope that this Flickr group will help you find out more about them, and that you, too, are inspired to help protect and save them.

TAKING PHOTOGRAPHS: There is one hard and fast rule which should be observed at all times:
the welfare of the subject is more important than the photograph.
Please follow the Countryside Code and avoid damaging habitat, especially avoid trampling food plants and nectar sources. We suggest that you keep to footpaths wherever possible.
Please note that we do not endorse any form of collecting.
PHOTO POOL: Share up to ten butterfly images per day: these can be of any stage in the butterfly’s life, egg, caterpillar (larva), chrysalis (pupa) or adult. Please take time to comment on photographs that others have shared. Pictures of insects other than butterflies will be deleted though we may make exceptions for day-flying moths.
Images of wild butterflies only please.
TAGGING your photographs: please tag your images with a 6-figure Ordnance Survey (O.S.) grid reference or with the location.
