About Bugey - FR
The Bugey is a historical region in the département of Ain, France. It is located in a loop of the Rhône River in the southeast of the département. Its capital was Belley. The Bugey belonged to Savoy until 1601, when it was ceded to France by the Treaty of Lyon.
Neighboring the French departments of Savoie, Haute-Savoie and Isère the Bugey region is located at the heart of the triangle formed by Lyon, Grenoble and Geneva. Delimited to the east and south by the Rhone river, its central part –the most mountainous- is dominated by the Grand Colombier (1 531 m).
Belley is the historical, economic, cultural and religious capital of the region, it is also its administrative chief-town. The Pays-du-Bugey covers 7 cantons : Belley, Champagne-en-Valromey, Hauteville-Lompnès, Lhuis, Saint-Rambert-en-Bugey, Seyssel and Virieu-le Grand as well as part of the Brénod canton.
