I've been wondering this myself for awhile. I think it is because Steve is concentrating all of his energy into developing Inkpad and because he is a one man shop he doesn't have the time to program for both Inkpad and Brushes. I wonder if it would be possible for him to congeal both Brushes and Inkpad into a single raster / vector drawing app? It would be similar to Autodesk's Sketchbook Designer which allows users to draw in both raster and vector shapes. Combining both Brushes and Inkpad would not only make for a powerful program but would also allow Steve to focus all his efforts on developing just one app. I wonder what other peoples thoughts would be about doing something like this?

Was just thinking about both apps, too! I love them both so much and would hate to see them fall by the wayside. I don't think they should be updated just for the hell of it but I do hope they keep on working with every system upgrade, etc.

Interesting question indeed...
I've only just bought the app after keeping an eye on it for a year - I have many others and always thought "why another one". Now that I've tried Brushes I'm kicking myself: why didn't I try this one earlier...?
I certainly hope that development hasn't stopped - but I also appreciate that the app is pretty solid so doesn't perhaps need quick fixes right now. New features would be awesome, but for a developer the question is how does he cash in on those? A new app is indeed the answer.
Maybe a third app that's both raster plus vector would be a great approach. Let us know what you're doing, Steve ;-)

We love you Steve! (Well - your apps, you know?!)
I want to know what it feels like to have David Hockney creating art on your app?

A chap I met recently pointed out to me that it is Brushes being shown as a painting app in Apple's latest video advertising iPad 3. Would they use it in such a recent ad if it were going to become defunct?
Does ANYONE have any recent info on the upgrading of this app? i am using it on my new iPad 3, but the resolution is pretty blurry. Colours are trippy, though.

try Procreate. I'm far more impressed with Procreate however there are some functions that are absent.
