I've had one crash report so far. If you have a crash, please send me your crash logs so I can figure out what the problem is (email me privately if you need to know how to find the log). Of course, please let me know about any other problems too.

I'll be submitting an update tonight or tomorrow with support for photo placement. I've had this working for a week or so but I wanted to test it on an iPad before shipping it. It's much more flexible than the iPhone implementation.

When you talk about photo placement, do you mean importing photos? I can't figure out how to do this yet, but I'm just getting started.

Brushes 1.0.1 with photo placement is now live.

I removed the WiFi sharing capability on the iPad. It was a huge source of confusion for many users, and unlike on the iPhone, I can assume everyone has email on the iPad. I'm going to investigate file sharing through iTunes, which I haven't had time to look at yet.

I'm also planning to do a blend tool soon.

Hi-rez export is fully supported with the iPad. From the Brushes/iPad gallery select "Email Actions" to send yourself the .brushes file.

Also, make sure you have the most recent version of Brushes Viewer (v1.3). From within the app, select Brushes Viewer > Check for Updates…

Actions are now recorded in chronological order on the iPad too, btw.

Steve, I love a lot about this version, but I think I would like broader or larger brushes to cover proportionally more of the larger canvas. I think this is what stops me from really enjoying painting on the iPad as much as the iPhone. I like painting in large brushstrokes and then refining the details. The broader brush stroke seems to keep things freer and more alive to me.

Doing final testing now; planning to submit Brushes/iPad 1.1 tonight. It's a pretty big update. Here's what's new:

– Smoothing is now applied to brush strokes
– Added support for speed-based pressure simulation (opacity and size)
– Added support for layer transforms (scale, rotation and translation)
– Added support for flipping layers horizontally and vertically
– Brushes can now be sized up to 100 pixels
– 8 new brushes
– Miscellaneous bug fixes

Steve, thanks for continuing to improve an already awesome software package in Brushes. Sketchbook Pro has some great features and for certain kinds of drawing I really like it. But there's something about the speed and immediacy of Brushes that I like better for the way I tend to work. And although you can for the most part replicate the same kinds of effects in both programs, I still feel like Brushes is more "painterly" for me.

Steve, you absolutely ROCK! very impressive update! and quick!!! that top brush looks like heaven to me...it's what I need! Well done! :-)

I am trying to figure out how to export the video playback--is the "email action" option? I haven't tried to open the file witht he viewer yet. Also, I think it might be helpful to have an info tab (like int he original Brushes for iPhone) with some navigational tips...or something to explain the different options. In some cases, it's self explanatory, but in others--like "email action"--it's a bit unclear.

All in all, the interface is wonderful. Very smooth and intuitive...feels very natural (althoug, I started out in Brushes...so I know it..even when I don't know it. :-)) thanks for listening and incorporating all this feedback!

Steve.Sprang is a group administrator Steve.Sprang says:

This review is taking longer than I expected. The last one was less than 48 hours. Sorry about that.

I removed copy/paste because Brushes on the iPad works somewhat differently than on the iPhone. Actions are recorded chronologically (which seems to be the overwhelming preference) but that makes copy/paste really hard to implement (if I want to preserve the actions for the copied layer). Duplicating a layer would be easy though; I'll try to get that in the next update.

Select "Email Actions" to send yourself the .brushes file. I'm going to investigate better file integration with iTunes, which I haven't had time to explore yet.

I would like to bring back the info panel too. All the tips from the iPhone work on the iPad, by the way. Double-tapping in the corners for shortcuts, etc. Also, you can make the toolbar and navigation bar hide automatically (like they do on the iPhone) by going to the Settings application, finding Brushes, and turning on "Automatically Hide When Painting" under "Toolbars".

I hope everyone likes the speed-based pressure stuff. I spent the last two weeks tweaking numbers and algorithms. I wanted to keep it very simple to avoid slider overload (ahem), so there are just two new switches in the brush panel: "Vary Size with Speed" and "Vary Opacity with Speed". It might take a bit of practice to get the hang of it, but you can get some neat effects and it doesn't have the canned feeling you can get with predetermined tapers. I'll be looking forward to your feedback to improve this capability going forward.

Good luck on the update! Can't wait! Brushes is already my favorite drawing app for the ipad/iphone.
Is this a good place to submit a few feature requests?

1) Opacity and Size sliders on the menu bar.
The less clicks the better, so being able to adjust the opacity and size without navigating to the brush menu would be a big improvement

2)Always On menu bar.
An option in the settings to always show the menu bar for those of us whose drawing style makes the menu turn on and off unexpectedly.

3)Collapse title bar functionality into the menu bar.
The title bar is pretty sparse on content for the amount of screen real estate it takes up. There are a few ways of freeing up space on the menu bar, like turning the brush and eraser buttons into a single toggle button, and moving some stuff into a menu.

4)Shape tool.
Draw a freeform shape silhouette and see it filled with the current color. Like an auto-filling photoshop selection tool. Or more precisely, like the shapes tool in Alchemy (al.chemy.org)

4b) Gradient effect for the Shape tool
Again, just like the module in Alchemy. I can't overstate how useful a tool like this would be in an app like Brushes!

Anyways, I hope this wasn't too presumptuous. I love your app! Way better than the rest. Overlay mode?! F-yeah!

I've been testing the Brushes app on my ipad and really enjoy the fluidity and richness I get from the different brushes. One thing I really miss is tapered starts and ends to brush strokes. The new speed based brush thickness doesn't give me enough accuracy and makes it difficult to work with smaller details. Adding taper would also make a lot of brushes seem more realistic.

Another welcome addition would be some sort of undo swipe gesture.

That's all I need to be happy, Steve! :)

I love Brushes for iPad, but for some reason, the playback feature has stopped working. It plays back for the first few moments, but then stops and refuses to finish playing back. It started happening after I reoriented one of my pictures, but I'm not sure the reorientation caused it.

Anyone have any suggestions on how I might fix this?

Got some problems with the replay too, some times it stops and, last time I tried it, Brushes crashed and closed... But I don't use it often.

I agree with machineboy about the brushes strokes thickness (like in Autodesk Sketchbook Pro in fact), would be great for small details, or elements like hairs or grass.

What about a tool to select/copy/paste a part of a layer ?

Brushes is great now, that's why we want it to be perfect soon ;)

Is there a known bug with replaying Brushes paintings? Some of my paintings will go through the first few strokes but then just stop.

The button will continue to be a square stop button indicating it is still "playing" but the playback does not continue. This only happens on a few paintings and may be related to adding/deleting/moving/or merging layers.

Brushes viewer? The Brushes Viewer application is Mac software. So if that's what you are talking about, you would have to go to the Brushes Viewer website and download the newest version (which I don't think has been updated).

If you are referring to Brushes for iPad, then you need to go into the iPad app store. The bottom row will show Featured, Top Charts, Categories and Updates. Just tap Updates.

That will then show you any updates your iPad applications might have. From there you can update individual apps or all them at once.

Hope that helps.

Recommendation for Brushes iPad:
I think the way paintings are displayed in the gallery is very nice looking. I don't find it very functional and never use it. I always like the "thumbnail" view to select my paintings that way.

@Steve I would like to see a way to set either the current gallery view or a new "thumbnail" view. Having anymore than 10 paintings on the iPad gets a little crazy. I know I could just press the thumbnail button every time, but it's just an extra touch for me.

Otherwise, this app is one of my favorites lately.

It might be nice to have a quick shortcut way to turn on and off while you draw (maybe a gesture or tap of some sort)..... all in all really great work, thank you!!!

Haven't quite sussed which pressure I like most, or if I like it at all. It's a strange one...

However one question : is anyone getting a strangeness with the visual setting for brush/eraser? I'm finding that when I swap between the two the icon will stay the same even when it's not.

I have noticed the brush size icon not updating when I switch between the two.

I only use the invert pressure, and not the 'regular' pressure at all. It is a little different to get used to...would be nice to be able to control the amount of speed needed to get the thicker linework, right now I zoom in to a specific line to get better control.

I'm brand new. Could someone point me to where I could find info on how to email and open the actions that record the brushstrokes so I can share them with friends and family. I know this basic, but I can't figure it out or find it--I'm a newbie. Thanks.

I would like to use brushes on my ipad and then export the finished file to my PC (windows XP) both for viewing as well exporting a high resolution file for eventaul printing.

I have two questions to determine if any of this is possible (using brushes on an ipad and trying to export to a Windows XP PC) :

1. From what I can determine, I can e-mail the finished brushes file from my ipad to my windows XP PC and then open the file for viewing?

2. Is there a way to export the finished brushes file on my ipad to my Windows XP PC for printing? If so, at how high a resolution?

If none of the above can be done, when might a possible update occur? Thanks!

mstebbi, you can get more info here www.brushesapp.com/support/
You can easily email actions file from your iPad (use the export button in the Brushes gallery), but you need a Mac with Brushes viewer installed to view it.

D&A1, to view the playback (actions file) or to export high resolution file, you need a Mac with Bruses viewer installed.

Hi Mreynes....appreciate your response. Since I'm unable to switch from PC to MAc anytime soon, it appears I am out of luck to view actions file or do what I especially want to do...and that is export a high resolution file from the ipad to my Windows XP PC. I wonder if they will develope a brushes viewer for PC anytime soon? I know others who also are in the same boat with regards to this Brushes program (who are also on a PC).

So if I am correct, the only thing I can do at this time is after completeing a drawing on the ipad, is to e-mail it to my PC, which I assume will be a low rez file and open this file for simple viewing? Is this correct?

Unfortunately, yes.
You need a Mac to playback actions or export HD files. On your PC you will only be able to get 1024x768 px images.
However you can playback actions on your iPad.

Thanks Mreynes for the info. I'm not concerned about playback..just simply to be able to send a "high resolution completed drawing" from my ipad to my windows XP computer. Not sure if any other drawing program for the ipad can do this either.

*** The other general issue I have with brushes, is I just purchased the Pogo stylus to use with brushes on the ipad, but there doesn't seem to be a way to adjust pressure sensitivity, so I have to push fairly hard down on the ipod in order for the "ink" to slow when I am drawing lines (in brushes). Any way to adjust the sensitivity, so all it requires is slight pressure? Thanks!

The Rebel Papa (working my way back to you - flick  Pro User  says:

@D&A1 - the pressure sensitivity is not an issue with the Brushes app. It is an issue with the Pogo stylus. There is another stylus made by Boxwave that doesn't require the "push" you describe. I don't use my Pogo because of the "push" needed. It makes my hand tired.

Good luck!

rebelpapa...thanks for the info!!! I'm going to order one and hopefully it requires approx. the same amount of pressure as using a finger on the ipad screen. The Pogo stylus as you mentioned requires too hard a push whenever it's used...just too much! Hopefully the Boxwave stylus solves this problem and it appears many reviews agree with you Thanks again!

This is a great program, I have not tried the invert feature yet but I'm sure I will.

I had thought it would be nice to be able to change the amount of trail off you get ( and opaqueness) relative to the speed.

Also when you change speed the opaqueness does not seem to change much, it seems like the increase in speed goes in steps, so if you only change speed a bit it stays flat.

And you really have to move fast to get finer lines.

Not that i don't like any of these features. Just some observations about them, i just thought adding some control of them may be good.

Anyway, Thanks for this app. I really do like it and it offers great functionality as is. Nice and simple layout that's easy to use is essential for me, and this program does a good job of not distracting too much.

Ps, Just in case you are looking for ideas i will also note that most time for me is spent changing brushes, It did make me think it would be nice to be able to order them in the menu or something. But to be honest it's not a big fuss.

Great job.
