About Broxbourne Woods

This group is for photos taken within the Broxbourne Woods complex in Hertforshire, UK.
Especially welcome are images which record the progress and results of maintenance and management work.

There are no silly rules, but:
• Images should ideally feature flora, fauna, fungi or landscapes, but the occasional human is OK. :-)
• Please tag your images with the name of the area in which they were taken.
• Geotagging is encouraged (as accurately as you can, please), but is not mandatory.

What are Broxbourne Woods?

The Broxbourne Woods complex lies south of Hertford and west of Hoddesdon and comprises Broxbourne Wood, Hoddesdenpark Wood, Wormley Wood and Bencroft Wood (all with public access) along with many other adjoining pieces of woodland which are mainly under private ownership but often crossed by footpaths. The Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust's Danemead reserve is also within the complex.

Much of the area forms a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and 237ha (586 acres) of the woods comprise the only National Nature Reserve in Hertfordshire. Broxbourne Wood is well known for its populations of Purple Emperor and White Admiral butterflies.

The winter of 2011/2012 saw the start of implementation of a 15-year management plan in the Broxbourne Wood NNR. The main aim seems to be the (re)creation of an area of wood pasture which was lost to conifers in the 1960s.

There are a number of designated trails within the woods, including a sculpture trail in the eastern section of Broxbourne Wood. The waymarked 'NNR Trail' is extensive and covers 17.5km (11 miles), ranging from Hoddesdenpark Wood in the NE to Wormley Wood in the SW.
