Sometimes referred to as "Little Rome", the area is home to more than 60 Catholic institutions such as the Franciscan Monastery, Pope John Paul II Cultural Center, Trinity College, and the largest Catholic church in the United States, the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
Other landmarks include the Brooks Mansion (located beside the Metro station), Ralph Bunche House, Sterling A. Brown Residence, Lois Mailou Jones Residence, Rayford Logan Residence, Robert Clifton Weaver Residence Site, Ionia R. Whipper Residence, and the Newton Theatre.
