About The British Library

For photographs of the exterior and interior of the British Library building in St Pancras, London.

Opened by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1998, the British Library stands directly to the west of St Prancras train station on the Euston Road in the King's Cross area of north London.

Its architect was Sir Colin Alexander St John ("Sandy") Wilson, FRIBA, RA, (14 March 1922 – 14 May 2007). It took over three decades to complete, from initial planning to opening. Wilson, involved throughout, described it as his "thirty year war".

Misunderstood by many, hated by some, loved by many others, Wilson's British Library is one of the centres of British intellectual life, providing research facilities and work spaces for academics, students, innovators, authors, scientists and curious people from all over the world.

Amongst the more than 150 millions items in its collection, you'll find the Magna Carta, Lindisfarne Gospels, Leonardo da Vinci's Notebook, The Times first edition from 18 March 1788, as well as

Material from 300 BC to today's newspapers
310,000 manuscript volumes, from Jane Austen to James Joyce, Handel to the Beatles
49.5 million patents
Over 4 million maps
Over 260,000 journal titles

So, after you've snapped a couple of pictures, why not read something.
