Is it worth considering somewhere like the Cornubia? I believe they have a room that they might consider us using (I believe that CAMRA meet there from time to time).

If we were to settle on a permanent home then my vote would be for the Nova Scotia, Cumberland Basin. There's a room upstairs I used to hire for band practice at a very reasonable rate. Atmosphere, clientele, food, drink, location are all good.
However I'm also very happy to continue switching every month.

We've been to the Cornubia a couple of times. It's one of my favourite pubs, but...
It's much too small unless we get the private room, and I'm not too keen on using a private room for the meets; it could make them a bit sterile and isolating.
Also, the evenings are getting darker and it's now dark before the meet will start. The Cornubia is in a location that's very hard to find, and is potentially a bit disconcerting to newcomers, or anyone who doesn't know exactly where it is. (You can be within 50yds of the place and be convinced you're completely lost in a deserted part of town.)
Sorry to be so negative. I do like the Cornubia. Maybe it's a better summer venue when it's lighter and we could use the tables outside.

Was the meet at the King William Ale House ok? It's quite big with a separate room at the front iirc and the food (if they do it in the evening) was well priced. Great selection of Samuel Smith beers too.
Parking is cheap in Queens Square at night too. Just a few minutes walk from all the main bus stops as well.
It would certianly get my vote as a winter venue and it has a pool table!!11!

Odd you should mention the Cornubia; that's exactly where I'll be. (Remember this?)
I thought the beer at the King William was rubbish. Not a handpump to be seen.

"my vote would be for the Nova Scotia"
I like the Nova, but I don't think it's central enough for people using public transport. And I mentioned my concerns with private function rooms in my post about the Cornubia.
"Was the meet at the King William Ale House ok?"
The place was OK, but was very full, with us squeezed into the front room. (And ironically, given its name, there was no decent beer except pricey stuff in bottles.)
Oh dear. I sound really negative; pooh-poohing everybody's suggestions. I just want this to work. My suggestion won't be popular with everyone (but no suggestion will). Horts (where we went last time) ticks all the boxes as far as I can tell. The only problem with it is that it lacks atmosphere. But a decent-sized group of articulate, witty and beautiful people such as we can bring our own.

Horts is fine with me... its central with an easy walk from the bus station for out-of-towners. Big enough to house us. Does lack atmosphere, but then as you say we can bring that with us :)

Fair point about the Cornubia, Gary (or Mr Pooh-pooh as we'll be bound to call you now :-)) and I was ambivilent about the whole "separate room" thing - but you're right there's no way the main bit of the pub is likely to be big enough.
Horts was a good place, the beer was good and I didn't notice the lack of atmosphere, mainly because of the inclusion of good company, a plastic dinosaur and a book on Russian propaganda.
Unless someone has a better idea, I'd be perfectly happy with Horts.

Through the beer haze, I seem to remember some fairly crude conversation should be added to that list Lillput.
I wasn't a big fan of Horts, was a bit soulless, even with us all in there, but am happy to go with the flow as it is nice and central.

As a possible alternative to Horts, you could consider the Hope and Anchor, on Jacobs Wells Road? Or is that too small? Great atmosphere, cheap food and real ale.

I really like the Hope & Anchor for all the reasons you've said Laura Mary, and we have met there before. But I recall that there were about 17 of us, we needed two tables and it was really difficult changing positions to talk to other people and be sociable, and if you were stuck on the wrong side of the table getting to the bar and ever going to the toilet is more easily said than done. We completely dominated one end of the room. If similar or greater numbers are expected, I think it will be far from ideal.
Fantastic place for Sunday Lunch though! :)

Rob - don't be such a purist - real ale can be served perfectly well without a hadpump. Not sure if the beer in the PWA is actually cask (good excuse to check it out again.....) but with Sam Smiths being a Northern brewery it would not suprise me if they were using electric metered dispense. Uncommon away from the North, but Banks's in the West Midlands use it too for their cask beers.
Oh, yeah, I guess Horts will do. Occasionally, before the refit, I would get the beer in my glass that the pump said it was - the cellarman was hopeless.

Trunky - so the beer is still being pumped from casks (rather than being forced out of kegs by carbon dioxide), just not by hand? Didn't know that.
Not that it matters to me as far as this month is concerned, because I'm going to be at the Cornubia watching MJ Hibbett.

yup, no aditional inert gas pressure, allthough a low pressure blanket is allowed to prevent spoilage and to be honest essential if the outlet has low volume sales.
Still the KWA might simply be Keg, I'll let you know.

The Voly's not my favourite place (but neither's Horts). It's a pretty good choice for the meets. It's central, it usually has space inside, it's easy to find and has decent parking nearby (as long as you avoid the criminally expensive Queen Charlotte St. car park). If people would rather meet there instead of Horts, that seems a fine alternative.

The beer in the KWA isn't cask, it's keg. That's why it has that pissy taste. Bloody cheap tho.

Thanks for that link Rob. Might I quote the following from it:
"Despite these claims, there has been no research that has found drinking urine to be useful for any illness."
My judgment is that it is a biological waste product, once ejected from my person, I intend to keep it ejected. No point in flying in the face of millions of years of evolution.

Most of the active ingredient in magic mushrooms is excreted in the urine; reindeers eat flyagaric regularly, and up-for-it lapps then drink their piss. I'm not saying it's healthy, but you know...

Errr... fascinating though this is, can I nudge the discussion back on track a bit? Where's next week's meet to be? I think the most appropriate venues mentioned so far are Horts and the The Famous Royal Navy Volunteer (aka The Naval Volunteer; aka The Voly).
Any preferences? (Or any great last-minute suggestions?)

Hello. I've never been to one of these. I'm mildly interested, but I'd prefer to meet up on a group shoot. Not that I don't like beer ;) I think I'd get more out of a meet if we were out on the field.
Maybe hire a studio or just landscape photography. Street photography might work.
