Where to Repair?

view profile

The AF on my beloved 300D is knackered.

Can anyone recommend a decent repair shop?

Thanks!

Black on White on coldharbour road is very good, they've been around for years and know what they are doing, dont think they charge for a quote either

Previously.

To repeat what I said there, I've always gone to Black on White, but they are only two minutes' walk away.

I'm always a little wary about getting things repaired as you tend to only get 3 months warranty on the fix. I've had CD players repaired only for them to go wrong again 6 months down the line.

Depending on what you're quoted it might be worth considering either a new 400D, or 350D which will be more but at least you get 12mths warranty. Or maybe try and get a decent 300 body on ebay?

Thanks for the info folks.

I am aware that repairs only come with a limited warranty and will weigh up the costs before I go ahead. But, I'm not sure I want to blow 500 quid on a new camera just yet.

You probably won't make this mistake, as you tend to be in Bristol on weekdays, not weekends, but BonW aren't open on Saturday afternoons.

is there a Canon service centre in bristol area? anyone??

There isn't a Canon authorised one, as far as I'm aware. You can search Canon's site here, but it looks like Canon UK's HQ in Elstree near London is as close as you'll get.

I think that Calumet in Montpellier arrange for repairs - I seem to remember seeing a notice on the door when I went im. Might be worth giving them a ring.

I eventually got mine done through London Camera Exchange on the Horsefair. It came with a 6 month guarantee, and has held out pretty nicely since.

LCE make me laugh at times with poor knowledge I remember asking if they sold 57mm linear polarizers or just circular ones, the girls patronizing reply was "Well you need a circular one to screw it onto a filter don't you.."

Then had spent a lot of time trying to explain what on off camera flash chord was, I know I wasn't particularly succinct about but still ...

That said Jessops made me laugh even more, when the manager offered me a job when I was picking up prints, his reason being - "I want to get more photographers working here." - hmm, so at the moment you've got ... monkeys?!

ahhh, so canon cameras need repairs?

Should have bought a Nikon........

Lillput  Pro User  says:

Yeah, LCE are a bit hit and miss...when I wanted a fast SD card for my D50 one of the lads in there tried to persuade me I didn't really need one as fast as that.
"Why would you want it to be that fast?" he said...so I explained I'd be potentially wanting to match the burst rate of my D50.
He looked with some incredulity that I had a DSLR. Sigh.
A couple of the guys in there are good though.

IMHO, however, you can't beat Jacobs on Whiteladies Road. They all seem not only to know about photography, and the relative merits of different bits of kit...but they also seem to give a damn...

Yeah, I went into Jacobs for the first time just the other day to ask them about the 350D, and they gave me exactly that impression -- helpful, and they knew what they were talking about. It's nice to know that wasn't a one-off.

(Hello, by the way! I'm Matt; lurking vaguely in the background here and still yet to make it to a meet...)

Come along they're curiously good fun! Will have to check out Jacobs sometime then - actually do I want to be persuaded to buy more equipment ... eek!

Hi Matt...no need to lurk (though lurking is a perfectly acceptable thing to do)...what Pete said, come along to the next meet. All the rumours about initiation rites are very misleading...it's a nice bunch of people with a surprising wide range of photographic and non photographic interests...and no one bites (well, not without asking first).

Pete if you're in the market for gear, you could also try Calumet in Montpellier (but they don't open on Saturdays). Slightly odd place but good prices on what they've got and the guys there seem pretty knowledgeable.
One of them did suggest to me that they could sell me a sensor cleaning kit and that cleaning the sensor was "simpler than baking a cake". But I've nearly forgiven him for that now, and I'd certainly go back there.

Thank you for the welcome, folks. I'm writing to a deadline at the moment, as well as doing the day job, so popping along to a meet might have to wait until March, but I will get around to it, honest ;)

Calumet's a funny one; not particularly accessible staff, think they thought I was just window shopping til they saw the red canon neck strap hanging out my bag then they perked up but still telling me stuff that was just wrong, not knowing the price for ANYTHING - not even close when they guessed.. I've not had much luck with photography companies much! The other thing is most seem quite ageist, against the younger shoppers!

Lillput  Pro User  says:

Oh, I sympathise. Maybe I got lucky in Calumet. As to the ageist thing...add it to the sexist thing...clearly only middle aged men can be photographers!! Perhaps you and I should give up now? Nah!!!

If Pete waits long enough he'll become middle aged (me too, but I've got a .... much shorter wait). I'm not sure what your options are, Liz.

LOL. I already qualify on the age thing...as to the other...ahem...s'OK, thanks, I'll stick to being patronised...:-)

Yeh feel I'm rapidly approaching the boring bit :p That's why I'm leaving the country for 6 months - get a bit of fear and excitement back in my life before it's all over, haha!

I'm not surprised at Calumet's apparent attitude to amateur photographers - they ARE a national professional dealer company, not an amateur one like Jessops etc.....

Black and White are good, but not so good if you are in a hurry - waiting times can be quite long. I've never had anything but praise for them and their work. They are very good with the more solid, mechanical, film cameras, where its more sense to repair than dump and buy new, as with digi.

Its quite an eye-opener to see the variety of stuff on their shelves, either waiting to be repaired, or ready for the owners to collect.

Not at all, Lil' Pete! Wouldn't dream of it :)

Not being condescending - but do like your pix.

Seeing your IR pic, reminds me that I heard the other night that Kodak are stopping selling/making(?) their B&W IR film. That'll be a blow to quite a few guys I know that love that film :( They'll have to make-do with a tricolour red filter instead!

I DID suggest to one that instead he used the "real" IR film - the false-colour Ektachrome, but he wasn't amused! Funny, that.....

Dave.
