About Bristol Rovers Football Club

The oldest professional football team in the City and County of Bristol, England.

Formed in 1883 as The Black Arabs and renamed Bristol Rovers in 1897 after briefly being called Eastville Rovers and Bristol Eastville Rovers.

The club joined the Southern League in 1899, and were founder members of the Football League Third Division in 1920.

The official club nickname of "The Pirates" reflects the maritime history of Bristol but the club is known locally as "The Gas" and the fans as "Gasheads" due to the smell of the large town gas works next to the old Eastville Stadium often wafting across the pitch on matchdays.
